Berthon seeks an electronics wizard to pick up the wand from our retiring minister of magic. An energetic seeker with the confidence to sell Raymarine, Garmin, Icom, KVH, Simrad and B&G, plus Mastervolt and Victron. The new wizard will access existing yacht owners, as well as expand the client list.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Following up enquiries from customers
  • Liaising with manufacturers regarding hardware specifications
  • Viewing boats to draw up technical specification
  • Costing labour and materials
  • Quoting customers
  • Obtaining signed orders & deposit payments
  • Scheduling work
  • Managing labour & materials for all electronics installation jobs
  • Setting to work of the new equipment
  • Familiarisation of new equipment with owner
  • Invoicing & the collection of payment

Shipwrights Apprenticeship Scheme Administrator

Shipwrights Apprenticeship Scheme Administrator

The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights is looking for an administrator to manage their Apprenticeship Scheme.  As well as providing administrative support this position will be the first point of contact for SMEs and will engage in the fund raising, development and expansion of the Scheme.

Responsibilities

  1. Manage the movement of funds to and from SMEs and the Shipwrights
  2. Disseminate appropriate funding information to marine SMEs
  3. Make recommendations to and track and report on objectives to the Shipwrights Education and Charities committee
  4. Coordinate and engage with training providers and colleges nationally
  5. Mentor successful companies joining the scheme
  6. Encourage marine SMEs to take on 3 and 4 year apprentices
  7. Continue to expand the fund raising profile of the scheme and raise funds to ensure the targets are met.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  1. Budget and Financial administration experience
  2. Business development experience
  3. Proven written and oral communication skills
  4. Demonstrated interest in education/training
  5. Proven experience of working with minimal supervision in a busy environment and an ability to make decisions
  6. Proven IT skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

Desirable

  1. Previous experience with charitable funding and fund raising
  2. Knowledge of marine apprenticeships, frameworks and college provision
  3. Able to communicate the importance of training to businesses that have no previous experience of proving training
  4. Knowledge of the marine industry and marine training
  5. Preferably educated to degree level

This position will be based at the BMF headquarters, Marine House, Egham and the post holder will report directly to the Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights.  This position will work closely with the Chairman of the Education and Charities Committees as well as with the British Marine Federation Training department, the BMF Regional Executives, Berthon Boat Company Ltd., the National Apprentice Service and SEMTA where appropriate.

Experienced Paint Sprayer Required

Experienced Paint Sprayer

To supplement our team of highly skilled painters and their apprentices on new construction and refit projects in our modern purpose built facilities.

The following attributes are essential for this role:

  • 2-pack paint systems.
  • Filling and fairing and spray application to yacht refinish standards.
  • Excellent eye for detail.
  • Reliable.
  • Motivated.
  • Ability to work unsupervised to exacting standards.
  • Proven marine industry track record.

The following attributes are desirable for this role:

  • Good working knowledge of Awlgrip and International 2-pack paint systems.
  • Good working knowledge of hand painting techniques.
    • Interior.
    • Exterior.
    • Varnishing.
    • Antifouling.

Berthon has been synonymous with yacht build and boat repairs since 1877, and we have a wealth of knowledge and experience. With 100 craftsmen and state of the art yard facilities in Lymington, Hampshire, Berthon has the ability to deal with all aspects of yacht maintenance, refits and boat repairs. We are also available for yacht construction or fit-out projects at the highest level. At our recently refurbished Lymington boatyard facilities, the dedication to providing the best service is key to the yards success. Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

Apprenticeships are available in the following disciplines:

  • Marine Engineering
  • Marine Electrical
  • Shipwright
  • Painter/Sprayer
  • Marina Operative/Boatmover (New for 2014)

The Selection Process

The first stage of the selection process is to complete an Application form.

In order to help your application we recommend you:

  • Gather evidence of your interest in the Marine industry.
  • Gather evidence of any relevant experience you have already gained in your chosen discipline.
  • Gain work experience in the trade you want to apply for either here at Berthon or in another manufacturing environment.
  • Research Berthon and the marine industry and consider why you want an Apprenticeship with Berthon.
  • Stand out from the crowd – the more evidence you can gather the stronger your application will become, this is your opportunity to sell you attributes.

If selected, you will attend an assessment, trade test and interview at our training provider Brockenhurst College. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to Berthon for a formal interview and tour of the facilities.

Pre-Requisites Required for a Berthon Apprenticeship:

Marine Engineer

If you are applying to be a Marine Engineer you MUST have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths at Grade B or above and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for problem solving and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, fixed machinery, manufacturers’ technical training and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Marine Electrician

If you are applying to be a Marine Electrician you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include two at A* - B in Maths and English plus a technology or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for Science, Maths and problem solving

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including market leaders Raymarine and Garmin, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Shipwright (Boat Builder)

If you are applying to be a Shipwright (Boat Builder) you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Evidence of working with wood, either at school or as a hobby

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Painter/Sprayer

If you are applying to be a Painter/Sprayer you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Initiative, mind-set and genuine interest in producing a top quality product

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, City & Guilds spraying courses held at Berthon, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Marina Operative/ Boatmover

If you are applying to be a Marina Operative/Boatmover you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D to include English and Maths
  • A good knowledge of boat handling skills
  • Initiative and team work ethos

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 in Marine Engineering (Marina Operative)
  • NVQ Level 2 in Marine Engineering (Marina Operative)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety and LEAN manufacturing as applicable. Specific machinery training with experience including FLT, Crane, Tractors and boatmovers
