Inside the Blue Sheds – May 2014

May 30, 2014

Keith Harris - Large Refit Manager - Berthon Boat Co.

Before we take a look at some of the projects from the Blue Sheds this month, an introduction to the man that runs the large refit department at Berthon, Keith Harris.

Keith has worked at Berthon for nearly 30 years, having served a 4 year apprenticeship at Husbands Shipyards in Marchwood as a mechanical fitter. He started with Berthon as a marine engineer in 1985, getting promoted up the ranks and starting project managing yacht refits in 1999.

Recently he was asked to join the monthly ‘Ask the Experts’ panel in Motor Boats Monthly answering questions posed each month from the public. Keith has also contributed to Motorboat and Yachting magazine, including this month’s article about the gorgeous 1968 Grand Banks 42 ROWENA, a yacht we know very well at Berthon.

LUCKY SARAH – Fisher 46

She has to be the best Fisher 46 on the planet, and after having a vast amount of work done in previous refits at Berthon, LUCKY SARAH is having some joinery work undertaken this month. The forward cabin is being reworked from two single berths into a forward double berth. This sort of layout reworking is something we have become familiar with, giving the owners the layout they need to make the yacht perfect for their needs.

WINGS – 12 Metre

This gorgeous 12m built in 1937 by Camper & Nicholson has been with Berthon since 2010, being launched in June 2011 for a number of regattas then stored ashore from August 2011 until now. She is currently in the paint preparation booth having a new coat of antifoul and some bottom work ready to be launched for a host of Mediterranean regattas this summer. As well as a few paint touch ups, Berthon are fabricating a new instrument panel for WINGS, which will display all the information needed on deck when racing, but be removable when not in use, allowing her to keep her traditional flush deck lines.

JOLT II – Baltic 45

After a busy start to her racing season in St Barts, JOLT II is back to her home port at Berthon Lymington Marina and will be having a quick pit stop in the Blue Shed so she is in perfect working order for the second part of the season; Round the Island Race, Cowes Week then it’s to the South of France for Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Berthon wishes JOLT II and her crew the best of luck for the second part of the season.

CHARM OF RHU – Fife 8 Metre

The gorgeous Fife is now back in the water after having a new stem fitted and having her superstructure woodwork stripped bare and the teak restored to its former glory using a brand new varnishing system.

This new system, Awlgrip’s Awlwood, is a unique product which consists of a clear wood primer and clear gloss.  The combination provides superb durability and flexibility giving the owner the best of a 2 pack in a one pack product. The results were superb and owner delighted with the final outcome.
