‘Part of the mission for this weekend is to inspire people, and nothing inspires as much as a tale of people that have been there and done it’ Jeremy Wyatt
Here at Berthon we, together with our friends at the World Cruising Club, aim to encourage and support all those keen to explore oceans far and wide, and the annual World Cruising Club Open Boat Weekend gives us the opportunity to do exactly that.
The success of this year’s show is a testament to the importance of providing a platform to share information on Bluewater cruising, in a relaxed and informal environment.
Over two days of seminars we welcomed over 150 delegates to our yard, all keen to pick up some tips and tricks from a highly experienced team of speakers, all of whom have bluewater experience – and indulge in our Caribbean buffet, which, judging by the feedback thus far, definitely hit the spot.
Once again, we were able to show delegates how best to prepare their yacht for Bluewater cruising, including cruising techniques, refitting for the voyage and our essential sails and rigging seminar. For those yet to embark on an adventure, we had a seminar advising on how to train for cruising, what to expect, and most importantly, what to look for when buying a Bluewater yacht.
Not only were we able to offer first-hand expertise, but delegates were also given the opportunity to ask questions and receive an honest, practical and above all knowledgeable response from our speakers. If you’re considering undertaking a spot of Bluewater cruising, it really is an event not to be missed – and not just for the exotic grub!
When not listening to panel discussions, delegates were given the now famous boatyard tour of our big blue sheds, by members of the Berthon Boat Company team.
Thankfully the weather gods smiled on us for the entirety of the weekend and we were blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine, making the work of the Berthon Brokers easier as they walked and talked delegates around ‘SEPTEMBER am’, (a stunning Discovery 55 and the first to have the new saloon layout that has inspired the MkII) ‘ANIKA’, (an immaculate Hallberg-Rassy 39, perfect for comfortable and secure passages) ‘CHISCOS’, (a Warrior 40 MkII, and true definition of a Bluewater go anywhere mile munching machine) and ‘BLUE DOLPHIN’, (a great-looking Rob Humphreys boat with variable draft and full spec for crossing oceans).
(These are just a selection of our Bluewater offerings – there are plenty more where they came from – just check out our listings page for more information.)
Sunday afternoon inevitably signalled the end of our weekend shindig, and as the sun on our shoulders began to cool, we waved goodbye to a host of friendly faces both old and new and raised a glass to yet another highly successful weekend sharing the joys, challenges and rewards of Bluewater cruising. Our seminars this year surpassed all expectations (all of which will soon be available on our YouTube channel) with a particular highlight being Rod and Lu Heikell’s tales of far-away places and the journeys that got them there – just click on the video below to watch it. The sharp-eyed among you may be aware of one of our very own (albeit slightly furrier) Berthon superstars, Ghillie – a keen Bluewater cruiser himself – causing a stir as he takes a particularly keen interest in Rod and Lu’s talk (of food, of course!)
We are delighted with the feedback we have received so far, and look forward to welcoming you (back, or for the first time) to this increasingly popular event next year.
