Berthon International recently sold PENOLIAM, who was beautifully built in Bowman’s heyday, with a great blue water specification and in sparkling shape, to a client based in Costa Rica.
PENOLIAM – Bowman 42 – ARC 2008
When PENOLIAM arrived at Berthon she was lifted ashore to the sale gantries, where she was fully decommissioned.
Berthon are able to deliver yachts anywhere in the world and, post survey, she was fully recommissioned by us prior to being delivered to her new owner in Costa Rica. Work completed included a new standing rigging package, completed by Berthon’s Rigging team, and a fresh coat of antifoul to fit her for her voyage. The 4 crew from our partners at PYD (Professional Yacht Deliveries) provisioned the yacht and fitted a protective layer to the yacht’s interior to ensure she arrived at her new home port in the same order in which she left Berthon. Once in the water, she was prepared for the 5,000 nautical mile delivery trip to Costa Rica. The trip will take around 52 days and she should arrive on or around the 15th January.
The first part of the trip was a shakedown sail across the Channel to Brittany, to ensure that everything was as it should be. No problems were found and it was reported that PENOLIAM was in great shape and properly prepared for the trip.
The next part of the trip was a long and slow crossing of the Bay of Biscay, bad weather conditions meant this was slow going. Rather than a straightforward crossing, the crew took a longer route – going around the Bay, then port hopping, to avoid the adverse weather. PENOLIAM has now arrived safe and well in the Canaries where she will be provisioned for what is looking like a quick crossing to the West Indies with good trade wind conditions forecast.
Despite the awful weather, PENOLIAM fared well on the first part of her trip with only a broken tricolour and a sick electric compass on the jobs’ list, demonstrating that a well prepared yacht can sail quite some distance in bad conditions with minimal problems. Both PENOLIAM and crew are looking forward to the Transatlantic.
PENOLIAM will make the next leg of the trip from the Canaries to the West Indies early next week, with an ETA of around 7th or 8th Jan. On arrival, she will meet her new owner, who will sail with the crew for the last leg of the trip -through the Panama Canal then onto Costa Rica. Look out for further developments…
Berthon would like to wish PENOLIAM and her owner fair winds and good sailing in her new home.
