Berthon and the September Boat Show season – Here comes the sun!

September 30, 2014

For the yachting industry September is a massive month with a number of Boat Shows in the UK, Mediterranean and the USA to showcase both new and second-hand brokerage yachts. This month Berthon attended 3 shows, as well as holding their own Collection yacht event in Lymington which is becoming something of an institution – 2014 was its 20th anniversary.

Running through the Shows for which we are holding t-shirts for 2014:

Collection XX

Gantry 3 during the Berthon Collection

This year we were showing around 90 pre-owned brokerage yachts, from Oyster 82s to a Pascoe 55 knot RIB, with a plethora of exciting vessels of all types in between, many of which voyaged from all over the world to be with us here in Lymington; we had a good show with visitors significantly improved on the past few years’ events leading to serious bids and negotiations currently under way.  Of course the finish of Collection XX does not mean that the fleet disperses, our offices remain open 7 days a week and whilst the fleet changes as yachts sell and others arrive, we are therefore able to continue to offer a fantastic selection of yachts for you to see, touch and write a cheque for at Berthon throughout the winter months.  The show most definitely goes on…

Southampton Boat Show

We had a number of Berthon faces at the Southampton Boat Show this year representing some of the many facets of the Group.

Berthon PSP Southampton Boat Show

Overall there was a definite upbeat feel to the show which may be partly attributable to the sunshine which was an improvement over last year.

On the Berthon stand, guests were more interested and enthusiastic than in previous years and no longer focusing on where to keep their yacht but more on what they could do with her.  There were many enquiries about refit and maintenance work for yachts of all shapes and sizes, including paint jobs, internal remodelling and engine refurbishment.  Our project managers have been busy contacting owners to get their work programmes scheduled before we are completely booked up – so much for their quick rest before the winter season ramps up!

Solaris 48 - Richard Baldwin International

Richard Baldwin was at the show representing Solaris and reported that “this year’s show definitely felt like a turning point”.  It was the 5th Southampton show for Solaris with a very eye-catching blue metallic 48’ on display, the name is slowly beginning to resonate with regular visitors and Richard commented “we had more good quality leads than at any time in the past”.

The number of visitors indicating a change of yacht within the short term (up to 12 months) has also increased, as have those with yachts either sold or under offer.  The Solaris range has grown quickly with 6 new models launched in the last 5 years (37, 42, 44, 58, 60, 72) and with 2 new models coming in 2015 (66 and 50).   Test sails are booked to start this week and meetings are planned at the forthcoming Genoa show (October 1st to 6th) with clients keen to see different models in the range.  Richard is looking forward with confidence to the 2014/15 season.

Contest 57CS

Charles Watson Marine is based in our offices and had a very positive show. Charles was showing a Contest 57CS, a Wauquiez 47 Pilot Saloon and an RM 1260.

Wauquiez 47 Pilot Saloon
RM 1260 - PSP Southampton Boats Show

There are yard visits booked for all 3 yards and it is expected that the 3 brands represented by CWM will have new UK owners for their yachts as a result of Southampton 2014.

The common thread amongst the yachts represented by CWM is that they are all built in small numbers, with none of the yards building more than 30 yachts per annum. All these yachts, apart from the smallest RM, are Category A, and as such suitable for serious ocean sailing.

All are beautifully built but that aside they are very different –

Contest are modern classics.

Wauquiez offer some of the only true Pilot Saloon yachts on the market as well as their cruiser racer Centurions.

RMs are truly unique light displacement Marc Lombard designs built with wood/epoxy hulls and GRP decks, with a choice of single or twin keel racing foils, or a swing lift keel on their new RM 1070.

Windy Boats UK PSP Southampton Boat Show
Ben Toogood on the Windy stand commented: ‘I enjoyed the show with lots of new contacts made, in the niche Windy market for high end, high quality motor yachts.’

Interestingly, he also noted that several people were downsizing from bigger yachts to the quality of build and status brand that is Windy.  There was a lot of extremely positive interest around the Windy 39 Camira on her debut at the Southampton Boat Show with anticipation building about the new layout.  The new Draco 27RS was also well received especially by Motor Boat & Yachting who tested her during the delivery to the Boat Show.

Cannes Boat Show

Windy Boats France at Cannes Boat Show
The weather gods were kind and the sun shone relentlessly where the Windy Coho 29, Windy Zonda 31, Windy Camira 39 and Windy Chinook 46 on display were sparkling and cooed about by all.  In common with all European boat shows, a relaxed environment for yacht buyers is paramount and without throngs of people “just lookin’” those that were interested had the leisure to look thoroughly at what was on offer allowing plenty of time to get a feel for the current, new models from Windy.

Bruno Kairet – Berthon France – Windy Brokerage said of the show: ‘We met a number of new clients whom we were able to introduce to the brand for the first time and the coming weeks are busy with trials on all the models which is pleasing. We were encouraged by the 2014 Cannes Boat Show, much improved on last year reflecting more the international outlook than perhaps the immediate French economic woes; accordingly, we are looking forward to increased activity in 2015’.

Newport Boat Show

Newport Boat Show - Berthon USA

Not to be outdone across the pond, the sun blessed our exhibit at the Newport Boat Show, unlike the usual one or two days of rain in past years.  Berthon USA featured the Moody 41AC and the first USA appearance of the Rustler 33; our stand was very busy.

There was great feedback on the Rustler and given that she is also very competitively priced compared to US built day sailors, genuine interest in purchasing!   The Moody 41 consistently pleased visitors and comments that she was the best yacht in the show were quite common; the interior is really gorgeous and she is well priced.  Given the lack of new product on the market over the past five years, there is pent up demand for new yachts and it showed as new boats were being sold by all exhibitors.

On the brokerage side – the Newport Brokerage Show runs concurrent with the Boat Show – we had the Swan 66’ TOUCAN and the 69′ custom McCurdy & Rhodes GRACIE.  And our next trick involves Berthon USA are heading off to Annapolis Oct 9-13th, where we are showing the newly arrived Moody 45AC and the Contest 42.  The US market is definitely on the upswing!
