Successful Bluewater Open Boat Weekend

June 30, 2015

The second World Cruising Club Open Boat Weekend was a roaring success in mid-May with 120 delegates enjoying another sunny weekend at Berthon, viewing a wide variety of bluewater cruising yachts, and attending an assortment of seminars. Visitors were also able to talk to yachtsmen and women who had bought a yacht, done the refit, crossed the Atlantic, cruised extensively, crossed further oceans and got the t-shirt to prove it!

With delegates travelling from not just the UK and Europe but as far afield as Canada making the effort to join the weekend festivities, it really reiterated its importance as the must do event in preparation for the ARC, World ARC or for anyone interested in Bluewater Cruising.

This year the mornings were full of seminars & talks and the afternoons were set aside for viewing yachts, allowing everyone the luxury of seeing, touching and sitting on a large variety of yachts. varying in length, build material and price; throughout the viewings Berthon brokers were on hand to show & tell, answering any and all questions. The famous Berthon yard tours this year were undertaken by Managing Director Brian May, showing delegates the diversity of work in the big blue sheds from new Shannon Class 45’ RNLI lifeboats in build to MOD craft in various states of repair & refit to the two Challenge 72s undergoing major refits prior to setting off on a world girdling tour. The latter included shot blasting the rigs prior to repairs, filling and faring, painting and stepping the masts with new standing and running rigging to complement new sails. Gleaming spray-painted hulls, new gensets, electronics, shaft breaks and watermakers etc provided a true representation of what Berthon can achieve in under three months in their big blue sheds.
