As long term corporate members of the World Cruising Club, supporters of the ARC, and all things blue water cruising, the annual pilgrimage to Las Palmas has become a bit of a tradition.
We are all familiar with the ARC, but have you considered ARC +? It leaves a little earlier, and takes in the Cape Verdes, en-route to St Lucia.
This year I decided to pop down in time to see off the intrepid bunch heading for Mindelo. The docks in Las Palmas were the usual mix of ‘we’ve got this totally covered’ to the beaver-ish determination of those ‘with a little last minute prep to do’.
It wasn’t all work. I managed to take in the fancy dress party, having conceded I couldn’t possibly dress up as a mermaid, and it was a very enjoyable evening, demonstrating the very social side of world cruising.
The social side covered, the WCC offer daily seminars and demonstrations covering all aspects of blue water cruising. Below a CLARELSA (Oyster 72), recently purchased through Berthon, bravely volunteered for the helicopter high line demo.
While there I teamed up with John Eustace, from JE Marine (with whom Berthon work very closely), a blue water specialist and all round Discovery guru. We caught up with the Discovery owners taking part in ARC + and spent an enjoyable evening with the owners of Discovery 55s CALLA and KILORAN.
We will of course be popping back down to Las Palmas for the beginning of the Arc 15th to 17th so if you would like to catch just let me know.
