December 20, 2013
Now the winter is truly upon us, the big Blue Sheds have welcomed a plethora of yacht projects to their voluminous innards which are all for delivery in the Spring of 2014 for the new season. There are others that will join for a pre-season wash and brush up like ROWENA – the 1968 Grand Banks 42’ WOODIE (pictured above) –
ROWENA came back to us in January 2013 following a fairly extensive refit and restoration with us in 2010/2011. We carried out vital repairs to the raised aft cabin deck, which has saved the owners the cost of a complete deck replacement. We also fitted new engine control cables and carried out “stitch in time” paint repairs. Of more note was an engine overheating problem that had the owner and his local yard perplexed for some time. Following launch we investigated and with a combination of fast work on the part of the Berthon engineer and speedy driving by the owner picking up the parts from Brighton, we turned the job around in 2 days, so the ROWENA could leave as planned.
“Just a note to let you know ROWENA cruised to Penzance late May, the weather was not good so we decided to run to France. She is now in La Rochelle a long way from home. She looks well in a dock with large yachts and catamarans, she has run well with a constant 8 knots with no overheating problems.”
Good news for the owners and great feedback for us here at Berthon. Following that we heard they had a fantastic season ending up in Jersey for a winter berth.
ROWENA is a credit to her owners and proves that an old girl, with adventurous owners and proper maintenance, can still cover the distances.
Below is the griff about the current Berthon refit fleet –
Beneteau Oceanis 40’ – UNCLE BOB
We are delighted to welcome UNCLE BOB and her (or is that his?) owner to Berthon for winter servicing, a few minor modifications and also so the owner can put his mark on her/him with a nice new paint job so she/he is ready for the new season.
The ultimate authentic charter gentleman’s motor yacht in the Solent area.
Need we say more?
Always gleaming she is very at home in the big Blue Sheds and is with us for external varnishing, a new rudder and for a new tabernacle system for her masts.
Moody 46’ – DUCK DHU
Just sold by Berthon to a favourite client who’s next project is a cruise around Britain, in comfort. We are undertaking a combination of refits and upgrades to cope with our indifferent UK climate. Work includes drawing and checking keelbolts, bilge tidy up and repaint, a birthday and new insides for George the autopilot, electrify winches, replace the cockpit teak, fit Cooney removable davits, fit a Maxprop, interior varnish work refresh, fit Eberspacher heating, fit inverter and genset, new batteries and nice new electronic widgets including Raymarine i70 system. She will look the business
Tofinou 9.5 – JOLT 1
Here from the Swiss lakes for new varnish work to make her shine, and attention to her bottom in way of blasting off the old antifoul and applying new.
Contest 55’ – WIGHT SPIRIT
Sold by Berthon this Autumn, she is having a blast and epoxy below the waterline, and nice new yacht paint on her topsides to make her sparkle. She is also being treated to new standing rigging – she will gleam in 2014.
8m Fife – CHARM OF RHU
A regular visitor to Berthon, she sustained some stem damage which we are sorting out after which both hull and superstructure will be completely revarnished. It will then be back in the water for her to continue her winning ways on the classic race circuit
56’ Hoek – TOUCAN
A new generator and external re varnish is on the cards for this stunning contemporary classic.
Is a much loved visitor to Berthon – she was born here in 1972. This winter, her alloy toe rails are being removed prior to a topsides repaint which will involve taking the surface corroded areas back to bare aluminium with the appropriate acid etching, filler and primer coats before topcoats are applied. She will have her normal wash and brush up, and some work to the steering is also on the agenda before returning to the packed RORC Ocean Racing circuit where she is a regular podium winner forty years on!
64’ Hoek – RITA
With us for air conditioning, chain plate covers, and general upgrades including improvements to systems access in time for use in the new Season.
12 ton Gauntlet – HEATHER
Bought with Berthon, and built by us in 1935, 78 years later it’s time for a wash and brush up at her yard of birth! A gentle, and thoughtful review and overhaul of her structure and systems is underway in the big Blue Sheds
So as you see, our unique in-house offering of management expertise and skills in all manner of material construction (wood, aluminium, steel, GRP, FRP, & composite) shines through the dreary winter months; the sheds are full and look out for the Berthon fleet sailing both here and internationally next year.
