Many of the yachts that pass through our hands via the brokerage market participate in this event – some of them multiple times. In 2013 as with other years there was a Berthon contingent in Las Palmas to watch the fleet depart and it was good to catch up with so many yachts and yachtsmen that have dealt with Berthon. Amongst the fleet this year we found Contests, Trintella, Oysters, Hylas as well as Najad, Hallberg Rassy, Moody and Sweden.
This year we co-hosted a party for the owners and crew of the 4 Discoverys crossing the Atlantic with our good friends at Discovery yachts to wish them all Bon voyage.
Discovery places a huge amount of emphasis on the importance of product support and they have a dedicated team of 3 who are there to ensure that if the unexpected does happen, any problems are dealt with promptly to ensure that the Discovery fleet, which these days numbers over 60 yachts, continues with its cruising programme with minimum disruption. The Discovery Team believes that all their yachts are part of the Discovery family and they are always on hand with help and advice wherever in the world one of their yachts finds herself. They are also wizards at managing fast shipping of parts to the most unexpected places and as they know every yacht intimately, they know exactly what to do to fix any part of any Discovery.
This year the support team has been busy delivering 6 new yachts. They believe that it is important that new Discoverys and their owners make friends so not only are the handovers extensive, they will also take the time to put in some sea miles with them to ensure that every facet of the yacht is fully demonstrated. Next year will see more of the same as the sheds at Marchwood are busy with 2014 deliveries.
As Discovery’s preferred broker for pre-owned Discoverys we appreciate how important it is for yacht buyers to know that they can rely on yard support when they buy their new yacht, whether new or pre-owned. New members of the Discovery family are always welcome at the Discovery yard and we introduce them to the owner care team. Our refit department at Berthon also works closely with Discovery refitting pre-owned yachts for new owners and new adventures.
The Discovery 4 at Las Palmas this year were 3 x 55s – HEBE from 2005 who is bound for Australia as she joins the World ARC after the Atlantic crossing, MERLIN from 2012 who will cruise the Caribbean this winter and SHEKINA both of whom will return to Europe in 2014. HEBE was refitted in UK before sailing to the Canaries but for her 2 sisters the ARC comes after busy summers in Scotland and the Baltic. Their bigger sister AMOKURA a Discovery 57 was delivered to her owners this July and will head up to the East Coast of the USA in 2014.
The ARC Discoverys had the benefit of the owner care team including Nigel Stuart, Discovery’s MD for the week before departure to ensure that everything was as it should be. With the exception of 2 forestays that were replaced as a preventative measure, the work lists were short.
We wish the whole ARC fleet fair winds and good sailing. Not for them the chilly winter weather that is ours to enjoy.
