CHALLENGE BUSINESS 45 raced in both the BT Global Challenge Races, in 2000/1 as LOGICA and in the 2004/5 Race as BG SPIRIT. As BG SPIRIT she took pole position in the Race having won 3 of the 7 legs outright. She still holds the Class record for sailing Round the Island. Berthon sold her to her subsequent owners and she was a well-known sight on the corporate charter scene in the South Coast and on the ARC, as BIG SPIRIT. Following a serious fall whilst out of the water in the West Country for a pre-ARC wash and brush up, it was thought that this spelt the end of this great yacht.
Here is an image showing the damage that she sustained during her accident –
It was not trivial by any means!
Fortunately for CB 45, her new owner Brian Pogson of Exeter Maritime Services, is a metal work wizard. He originally bought her as scrap – but this is what he says –
“We motored her back under her own steam from Plymouth to our boat yard in Exeter, and she was travelling perfectly straight. I knew then she was not twisted and upon further investigation discovered that her damage was localised to the impact zone”
“I strongly felt that this stunning and well-built yacht was too good to scrap and that we could bring her back to life. We have the facilities, skilled team and knowledge of boats and steel already in place. Making the cost of repair feasible for us.”
“We are working with as many of the original Challenge build team as possible to ensure a good-as-new repair.”
“The original design engineer is supplying the nested information from the original cutting files for us to cut the new steel parts on our water jet table and we’re using the original Challenge Fleet Rigger.”
“Throughout her repair we’ve been amazed at the high quality of the original steel and paint; she has no rust and no degradation. It was this quality of build that minimised the damage to her.”
CB 45 will also have a new rig and sails and she will be signed off by MECAL, the notifying authority, who oversaw the build of the Challenge 72’ fleet and who are still involved with most of the Challenge fleet both 67’ and 72’
She offers a great opportunity for adventure sailing at the highest level, and at Berthon we are delighted to act as the brokers for her sale. Here are her particulars –
