Blue water Cruising Yacht Market Report summary May 2009
As with all sectors of the brokerage market, currency is the main determinant in successful sales in the UK, Europe and the US. It is important to remember that the US $ is the dominant currency for international yachts sales and therefore, yachts priced in other currencies need to be in line with the $’s progress. At the moment this is making sterling priced yachts price competitive although there has been some recovery of the £ against both $ and € in the last month. Having said that, the £ is still at a very low level.
The market is very much segmented, and it is our experience that the bluewater cruising yacht market is holding up well. There are good levels of interest with numbers of yacht buyers choosing now to invest in a yacht for a cruising adventure whilst investments are earning little and the business world is in less than rude health.
As ever there are 3 important factors that need to be considered when placing a yacht on the market:-
- Location
- Condition
- Price
It is important to get these right if a sale at market value is to be achieved within a reasonable time span.
For those embarking on bluewater cruising, having a yacht that is already fully spec’ed to go is a huge draw. It is our experience that applicants are more drawn to an equipped yacht that has seen use than a cheaper low spec version where the cost of fitting the equipment (which would be new) brings both yachts to relatively the same price.
However, full equipped yachts do need to be sold in a proper state of maintenance and in cosmetically clean and smart condition. A shabby, well equipped yacht will not inspire confidence.
A lot is talked of build material. At the moment in the market, this appears to be less critical than the marque of yacht. Buyers are thinking of residual value and series yachts of quality are finding the best market.
We predict that nice well maintained, well equipped bluewater cruising yachts will continue to find healthy levels if interest through the summer of 2009.
