The Oyster 56 was one of the most successful yachts ever to be built by Oyster. They have travelled to all corners of our planet, and have done so safely, comfortably and whilst doing so have given their owners immense pleasure. EL MUNDO has just completed the Oyster World Rally and is in the Southern Hemisphere but due to be shipped back to the UK in March 2018 to be sold. Her current owners spent over £100,000 preparing her for this trip when they purchased her in 2015 including new electrical system, new electronics, full overhaul of the rig and much more. She is in truly sparkling shape.
Note: Due United Kingdom March 2018. Photos are from before the most recent major refit, and may show some of the older electronics etc.
We bought EL MUNDO in Lymington in Summer 2015, completed a huge electrical, electronics and rigging refit in the UK and then sailed down to the Canary Islands. We then crossed the Atlantic with the ARC 2015 and spent several months cruising the Caribbean from Grenada up to the BVIs. EL MUNDO was on the hard in Antigua for the hurricane season before joining the Oyster World Rally in Antigua starting in January 2017.
On the rally, we have sailed to Panama, the Galapagos Islands, the Marquesas, the Tuamotus, the Society Islands, Palmerston Island, Tonga, Fiji and finally New Zealand. Particular highlights for us were the Tuamotus (completely un-spoilt with amazing diving and deserted atolls), Palmerston Island (a single family with English roots living on an island hundreds of miles from anywhere) and the Lau Group in Fiji (stunning natural landscapes and villages with very limited exposure to the modern world). What a trip!
We were looking for a comfortable yacht that would keep us safe on open ocean passages – our son was 4 years old when he crossed the Atlantic, and 5 when he crossed the Pacific, so having 100% confidence in the safety of our yacht was very important.
The Oyster 56 is so sought after because she is built to an amazingly high standard and not to a budget; everything is overbuilt and incredibly strong but the yacht is also a luxurious and comfortable home on the water. We have been completely happy with our choice and have been particularly impressed with the ongoing support that Oyster provide to all owners, whether their yacht is 6 months or 20 years old – it really makes a huge difference to the ownership experience, particularly when travelling in less accessible parts of the world.
We have been on board many different blue water cruising yachts over the last 3 years but we wouldn’t have traded EL MUNDO for any of them – we will be very sad to see her go.
