TOCCATA FPB 64
Sue, Brian and Dominic,
As Sue knows, I am the owner of FPB 64 TOCCATA, which recently completed a two-year stay in the Lymington yard. I am writing to express my appreciation for the outstanding level of service we received from Berthon during our stay. From our arrival at the marina in November 2018 through our departure a few weeks ago, and including a surprisingly long stay in your brilliantly timed customs yard, we were fortunate to be able to take advantage of Berthon’s own craftsmen, a number of subcontractors in Berthon’s ecosystem and the overall sense of safety and security knowing that our boat was in good hands while we were thousands of miles away.
Toccata recently arrived back in the USA via ship and it was both a relief and not surprising at all that she arrived with all work having been performed well and ready to head off on her next adventure.
In addition to Sue’s constant guidance for the entire FPB fleet (which brought us to Berthon in the first place), I would like to make special mention of Matt Hart, who took over supervision of our boat this year. Matt performed well given the challenges of working with a demanding owner many time zones away and, most importantly, ensured that Toccata was ready on-time for her departure from the yard. Also, Marnie Perkins in the accounting team was a star in dealing with our account and related funds flows.
We regret that we were not able to retrieve TOCCATA ourselves this year but will always appreciate our time with Berthon and in Lymington itself and hope our paths will cross again one day.
In the meantime, we hope you have a safe and healthy holiday season and new year.

Windsong Malo 36
A quick line to say that, after an uneventful trip down to Cornwall 2 weeks ago, we have Windsong safely moored at Mylor Yacht Harbour.
Now that we have left Lymington, at least for the time being, I wanted to record my thanks for the way that we have been looked after by your business over the last 18 months.
Sophie was great to deal with and very helpful on our purchase of the Malo 36; Matt Hart and Jim Catterall (and their teams) were excellent and both went the extra mile in helping to manage the re-fit of Windsong over the last winter whilst we were in Portugal – for longer than intended because of the Covid-19 pandemic; and Luke Machin and his team were unfailingly helpful and good humoured in resolving issues in the marina. Berthon rightly has a good reputation in the market and we experienced this quality across the business during the past 18 months.

Footloose Windy 37
I should have written earlier regarding my Windy 37 to thank your staff for the help given.
I bought Footloose through your brokerage in 2006 and have since had many hours of fun. As I live on the East Coast with no shore power, I fitted a generator firstly to top up power and secondly because I have always worried about the fact that all of the batteries are shut in the engine compartment and I have never worked out a proper Plan B for access, should the batteries fail.
After sixteen years, I finally had the occasion to wish I had sorted a proper plan earlier. For the first time since owning the boat I managed to leave the batteries in the ‘on’ position and, having not fixed an issue with the generator properly over the winter due to Covid, found myself with no battery power.
I called your office for advice and was told to expect a call back shortly from the engineer who was off site; I was very happy to receive a call within fifteen minutes. Not only was it a prompt call back, but it was from Tom Wright who I understand is an engineering specialist within the Berthon group. I had managed to get myself out of ‘Jail’ by that point and will not bother you with the detail other than to say fortunately the Volspec engineer attending the boat the week before had not been as stupid as I; and had turned off the generator isolator – which was the unfinished winter job and also located in the engine compartment.
I would ask that you pass my thanks on to your receptionist who used her initiative to get Tom Wright to call me. Tom had a ready solution that I did not need to use, but which will be duly noted so that, should I be so stupid again, I do not find myself in the same position.

We continue to be so impressed and grateful to the dockies – they are amazing, really helpful and we really appreciate them and how they lookout for our boat. We are also really grateful to Tom Cload and his team. They have been brilliant at getting our boat ready for the season and are very responsive. I did have a couple of snags and he professionally addressed and got them/is getting them sorted. So all happy and thank you to the guys. As an inexperienced sailor and very much at your mercy regarding the engine and workings of the boat, I really love the way Berthon looks after us and keeps us safe so we can use the boat. We had a couple of quite simple questions at the weekend, which needed an experienced eye and nearly resulted in us not being able to use the boat. It would be good to have an engineer available \’on call\’ to speak to – eg on face time for if we do encounter problems at the weekend which could be easily resolved. That could be a general idea for the future – not just a Covid thing.

We wanted to say how pleased we are with the work done this winter on Roshanak. She looks like a new boat!
We would not have embarked on this refit in the first place if we had not had confidence in Tom and his expertise. Our confidence has been fully justified by the result. Jim’s expertise and oversight on the electronics and electrical refit have also been excellent. They are both a pleasure to work with.

Hi Tom, We want to say how delighted we are with your fitting of Wesmar stabilisers to our Aquastar 430. You and the Berthon team did an outstanding job from the initial project appraisal right through to handing our boat back to us. As with any complex retro-fit project of this kind there was always going to be the odd surprise. The multi-skilled team at Berthon were able to handle each and every issue and kept us fully informed along the way. Fitting stabilisers to our Aquastar has given us in effect a new boat and we are delighted with the result.

I have looked after her for 3 winters, the last two having been spent with Berthon Boats.
Working as an owner’s representative, and watching a boatyard’s performance on refit is sometimes a thankless task, and can easily lead to acrimonious disagreements.
I would like to express my thanks to you and the staff of Berthon for making the last two winters really pleasurable.
The work done has all been to the highest standards. The care and professionalism of the craftsmen doing the work can only be applauded, and the sheer pride taken in doing the job properly is something that we are seeing less and less. Berthon are definitely upholding real standards of workmanship.
Every person, from manager to apprentice deserves my thanks, but special mention must be made of my project manager, James, and the guys that did the long hours of work, shipwrights Mark, Martin, Dave and Fraser, engineers Adam, Godfrey and Nathan, painter Martin and his team, and Matt with his boys, who managed to interpret some of the boat’s more terrifying electrical secrets. The dockmasters are always helpful and cheerful, the supply department and Nigel in stores have kept things running smoothly.
The accounts department, have made sure that I have been kept up to date with very transparent accounting.
All in all, a very satisfying experience, which has left her in a much better condition than she has ever been in before.

A big thank you to you and your colleagues for all the work you organised for my boat during the year including the engine servicing, work on the instruments and several repair jobs.
Thanks to Lisa for the lift & scrub jobs and to Sandra for dealing with my berthing agreement and thanks to Marnie for keeping me informed about my account. The new copper coating which Tim organised last year is holding very well and should be in good condition for many years.

I would like to thank Berthon for a really good yard experience. The standard of workmanship and care shown was impressive. It would be difficult to thank everybody involved in the project, but from the start, when Tom Cload took me seriously, and gave me the answers that made me choose Berthon, right through all the craftsmen and engineers, everyone gave their utmost to make her into the boat that she could have been when new. Matt, Adam Perkins, Mark, Martin and Dave the shipwrights, Martin the painter, the junior technicians and shipwrights, Nathan, James, Steph, Fraser, and many others all worked together to bring out the very best in the boat. The unsung workers too, in the accounting department, the senior managers and boat movers. My thanks to them all. Finally, James Hollingsworth. He worked tirelessly to give the boat what was needed, he did his best to act in the interest of the project, I would like to thank him for his honesty and help. So after six months of enjoying Berthon, we are finally sailing out today. So we wanted to take the opportunity of saying an enormous thank you to your in-house team here. Right from buying Inelsamo through Ben Cooper, to Dave’s team in the Dockmaster’s Office, Tom Cload’s crew in yacht maintenance & repair and Simon’s team of boat movers and valeting. They have all been brilliant. Super professional but also extremely patient with answering all my no doubt inane questions! All the work we have had done on Inelsamo is perfect and through the support of the team here, we have also both learnt an enormous amount about our boat which I am sure we wouldn’t have, had it not been for your crew.

My plans have now been confirmed and, weather permitting, I plan to set off across Biscay on July 27th. I don’t know how long I’ll be gone but I expect Florence will come back to Lymington either to recover or be moved on by Sue in the coming years.
We’ve very much enjoyed our stay. Your dockmasters and support generally has been unfailingly helpful. You have an excellent marina.
Gareth Griffiths is dealing with some chafe and splicing issues and a damaged windex but everything else seems sorted out now.

We got back to Yarmouth Harbour on Monday afternoon, quite satisfactorily thanks, moving through the water a lot faster than when we had come over to you in January. The strength of the wind here last week was quite phenomenal so we were stuck in the harbour for a couple of days. Our mass of new fenders (no socks) protected the topsides. But when the wind subsided we moved back to the River Yar Boatyard, on the next high tide, and so have been safe at “home” for a few days now.
We wanted to say how much we enjoyed meeting you, and working with you, over the works to Frances Louise V. It has been an absolute pleasure to deal with you, right from when we first picked you up from the ferry to see the boat. You eased us through an episode in our lives, and that of Frances Louise, that was full of important decisions, requiring lots of technical know how. It could, so easily, have become a very worrying time, but, through your input and approach, it all went very smoothly, from our perspective, and we are very grateful to you for looking after the three of us so well. We also liked dealing with the Berthon workforce. You have all been so friendly, helpful, welcoming, and above all, so very professional, and so good at what you do. We had great fun being with the boat in your yard – David is missing the buzzer in the evening telling him when its time to stop work! Thank you for accommodating him too. Most importantly we are absolutely thrilled with the work that you have done to Frances Louise. All beautifully completed. She looks absolutely great. When we tied up in Yarmouth people in the next boat came to chat to us and wouldn’t believe the boat was 22 years old! We all, including my Father, feel you have set her up well for the next 22 years…………. So a great big thank you to you all. We would have no hesitation in recommending Berthon to anyone else, or in coming back, if we need to, in the future. Thanks to your leadership it has been a good experience all round.

Your service team have carried out a very fast and professional service of outdrive legs, propellers, anti foul and relaunch.
Before Christmas Tom Cloud arranged for Westbreeze to be on shore Tuesday 2nd January, first day back after Christmas holiday.
I arrived to find at 08.30 Westbreeze ashore being hosed off. Because of the need for a fast turn round your staff where excellent.
Tuesday boat service; Wednesday hull anti-fouled; Friday hull polished and by Friday lunch Westbreeze back in the water. It all went like clockwork.
Last week Wednesday morning Roy your engineer arrived to carry out 100 hr service the engines and with the same very fast, high standard of work being carried out so well.
After years in the Motor trade as a World Class SME it is good to see such excellence in your boat yard. I could not have received better service anywhere in Hampshire.
I was under pressure from Sea Ventures to have the work carried out on the Hamble, but pleased that I resisted their demands and stayed where I have confidence.
I have passed to Tom Cloud the Service quotes from Sea Ventures for comparison which shows you are competitive.

Audacious Spirit II – Berthon Works – Table rectification – Delivery to RMYC Poole
Letter of appreciation re Dockmaster MRC
On Monday 24th July, I collected my above Motor Yacht from Berthon, subsequent to fully satisfactory completion of works, overseen by TW. I left the Saloon Table to be serviced and this was completed shortly thereafter.
On Monday 24th August, I drove over to Lymington to collect the table. Unfortunately, it would not fit safely in the boot. I contemplated returning in the boat to collect it, or hiring a van. In the event, completely without any request from me, your Dockmaster MRC, who had tried to help us secure the load, said that he would arrange to have the table delivered to my Boat’s berth at the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Poole. In the event, apparently, MRC used his own estate car to drive from Lymington to Sandbanks, Poole and delivered the table to the club. He did not call me and made no claim for reimbursement but did it on his own accord.
Quite frankly, I have to say that this service was totally exemplary and is, of course, a credit to your company and employees. I would like to thank MRC so very much for his kind efforts, which are deeply appreciated.

Thank you for all your care and courtesy which made this repaint and refit a very satisfying success. I much appreciated your advice and knowledge which contributed to the excellent outcome of this project.
Although our point of contact for this project was Robin, I am very conscious that behind him there was a whole team who produced the end result that was really first class in all respects. In particular, I think that the paintshop team produced a really beautiful result, and those who worked on the varnished brightwork did an outstanding job, which is most satisfying and gives the boat a showroom finish. This is just to thank you, Simon and the team for the excellent work that you have all done. The gelcoat repair to the starboard side is invisible and the superstructure looks like new again. Could you please pass on our thanks, too, to the electrician who installed our new television and to everyone for leaving the boat in a tidy state. It was a pleasure to climb aboard this afternoon. We should also have thanked the shipwright who had the difficult and frustrating task of attempting to track down the source of the persistent leak in the aft cabin, which, it seems, was a production fault. The repair and re-caulking are as new and we are very grateful for his efforts.

I would like to let you know that the communication and service given by Alan (Yacht Brokerage) and Greg(Yacht Refits) was first class in all respects, so many thanks to you, and all your team for managing everything so efficiently.
PENOLIAM is currently in Camaret, waiting for a better weather window to head south across Biscay. I hope to get on board in Antigua and make the trip across Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and then on to her new home in Costa Rica.

Thank you for our new Berth for our recently purchased PRINCESS V52; we have now had boats with Berthon for some forty years, and this is appreciated as making life much better for us; we have always enjoyed the atmosphere and helpfulness of the staff.
However, I would also advise that we have been most impressed with the recent yard work and installation of the upgraded Side Power thrusters. The work was very professionally carried out by your skilled shipwrights and engineers.
I would particularly like to express our Gratitude to Greg who took great care to ensure the work was to a very high standard. He also pointed out a few unrelated issues that were noted by your team and very efficiently put things right.

Hi Brian & Robin,
We are delighted with the work that the Berthon team has put in, and particularly the efforts from Robin who had a tough task to project manage everything to get Aura looking and working better than new. There have been some steep learning curves and some frustrating moments but at last we can relax and enjoy the yacht as she was meant to be used. All we need now is some decent weather!!
We had a horrible crossing of Lyme Bay with a Force 5-6 on the nose which gave us a chance to see if the prop setting was right. It proved perfect in big seas, short wavelengths and strong winds and enabled us to punch through albeit like a submarine sometimes!
The water maker is working perfectly when dial is at 3.5, and the generator gave us stacks of hot water after a very wet walk with Humphrey! All the hard work was worth it, the boat works properly for the first time in 5 years…….

Thank you very much for your excellent assistance with our recent rigging problem. At one stage we thought we would be stuck in Guernsey for several weeks before the riggers there would even look at our problem, and they intended to lift the boat out before craning the mast off, which would have given us further problems with accommodation etc.
We were delighted that you were able to make the arrangements for the mast to be looked at even before we returned to Berthon, and that the mast was craned off, the problem fixed, and replaced all within the first working day after our return. The riggers, Dave, Adam and Tim were extremely professional and efficient as well as being friendly and sympathetic to our problem. They really did an excellent job, as of course did the electrician, Ian, another excellent member of your team.
In particular we would like to thank you for your excellent advice, rapid understanding of the nature of our rigging problem, willingness to help and for arranging the work, despite the fact that we were in St Peter Port at the time.
We have taken the opportunity to go home for a few days to do the laundry, cut the grass etc, and plan to cross the Channel again this coming weekend, which would be a week or so before our problem had even been looked at if we had stayed in Guernsey.

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know what a great experience I’ve had with your team and with my initial time at Berthon.
Alan’s (Berthon International Yacht Brokerage) been an absolute pleasure to work with in completing the yacht purchase, organising the details of transferring ownership, and working though even the smallest details with the prior owner. He’s made everything just plain easy.
James (Yacht Refits) has been extremely responsive in managing all final works required on Bhootan to get her to launch. He’s proactively followed up and kept everything on track in a professional and courteous manner.
Robin (Yacht Refits and Rigging Services) has been great in providing realistic and actionable options to service and in some cases replace Bhootan’s rigging. His team (led by Dave I believe) was incredibly helpful last week going so far as to walk me through every piece of the rigging while patiently answering each and every question I had.
And finally, the dockmaster team (Berthon Marina) has gone out of their way to be helpful as I get settled including allowing me to temporarily relocate while dealing with an engine issue last weekend.

I write simply to express our delight at the outcome of the work on Equinox. We are very pleased we went for the full option in painting and polishing. I should also mention how pleasant it was in dealing with Dave Street and Kim Scott-Robinson. Dave was extremely patient and helpful – going way beyond any possible contractual responsibility to keep me informed and to advise what was best for the boat. He was extremely efficient in a very personable way. Kim too was her usual charming self – sorting out our various logistical requirements quickly and helpfully.

We have always expected a high quality of work from Berthon. However, a recent episode deserves a special mention as it was totally unplanned. We discovered a problem with our spreader tips. This meant that we needed to have the mast un-stepped, various tasks carried out and the mast re-stepped. Whilst it was out, we took the opportunity of asking for some other maintenance to be carried out on cables and re-sealing of the chain-plates on the deck. Dave Street and his colleagues did a first-class job of organising the necessary work and it was all achieved in time for us to adhere to our original plan of leaving Lymington on 9 May.
The boat is now in Plymouth, ready for the Rally Portugal start next Sunday.
As the boat will be out of the country for a couple of years now, we’d also like to commend the Dockmasters; they are the best we have ever encountered.

Just to let you know Greebo (soon to be “Spring Dawn” by the way) and I arrived in Liverpool safe and sound yesterday evening. We enjoyed a couple of great days sailing to Falmouth via Dartmouth and then I brought her the last three hundred miles back here on my own.
Everything went really well – from Falmouth to Lands End we were doing 6 to 7 kts in 15 to 20 kts of breeze with just the genoa! All that good work on the hull paying off!
She looks great and was much admired by all and sundry. The engines performed faultlessly, including a long motor up the coast of Wales.

As one might expect at this time of the year, after the accident my aim was to have the boat back on the water, repaired to a high quality and in as short a time as possible. In this I was delighted. Berthon gave me a schedule that was perfectly correctly established, and then complied with that schedule exactly. I would like to express my thanks to the skilled workforce at Berthon who carried out an extensive refit of Taonui this past winter. After 20 years of wandering the oceans she was in need of some tender loving care. Now she looks better than ever.
I would particularly like to thank Darren for his imaginative and excellent engineering installing a new windlass, replacing the innards of the diesel heater and executing some very professional welding of certain deck fittings.
Thanks also to the crew who stripped the old paint from the decks and prepped the surface. To state the obvious, this makes or breaks a repainting, and the care and determination of this team can be readily seen in the finished product. They laid the foundation for Chris’s perfect paint work. Not a ripple, sag or imperfection.
Speaking of painting, I wish that I had met the person who prepped and repainted the dinghy…..a great piece of work.
Thank you Smurf, the fix-it man, for putting it all back together after the painting was completed. Smurf delights in getting the details right which he does with a minimum of fuss and with considerable skill. It is the attention to the details that distinguishes a quality job from the ordinary.
Also thanks to John for waving his magic hands over the engine…..it has never sounded so sweetly.
And a sincere thank you to Dave Street who managed the whole project, made it all happen and kept me well informed with emailed pictures and weekly phone calls. I really appreciated Dave’s determination to ensure that the job was “done right”.
Taonui is off again to see some more of the world. This was her sixth visit to Berthon. Likely she will be back again in a few years.
