Seasonal Dockmaster

Berthon has an immediate vacancy for a Seasonal Dockmaster until the end of September to supplement our existing experienced team in a busy, friendly and customer focused marina office.

The following attributes are desirable for this role but training will be given:

  • Computer literacy to process bookings and populate databases
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, confident and personable with a good telephone manner
  • Good listening skills with the ability to retain information
  • Presentable with good customer service skills
  • Flexible approach for integration into a shift rota system including evening, weekend and public holiday shift patterns
  • Basic understanding of the leisure marine industry
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy and recording capabilities

Main Duties and responsibilities:

  • Taking/ recording bookings
  • Safe collection of a range of payments
  • Holding and issuing keys
  • Carrying out berth checks
  • Communication by VHF and portable UHF radios
  • Issuing instructions to visiting yachts by VHF radio
  • Ensuring the safety of clients, staff and visitors on the marina
  • Retailing fuel and oil using correct and safe procedures, adhering to all regulations
  • Good housekeeping awareness, ensuring all facilities are kept in a clean presentable manner

IT Support Assistant – Full Time

Reporting to the IT Manager, you will be one of a two-person team supporting 50+ computer users. The IT Support role is focused on maintaining and developing the current IT hardware and software infrastructure and systems, including:-

  • Windows 7 & 10 PC installation and maintenance (networked and stand-alone)
  • Printer installation and maintenance (network and desktop)
  • Day to day user support and problem resolution
  • Network user profiles and security
  • Network and server administration and maintenance
  • Network storage administration, archiving
  • System backup and recovery
  • In-house application maintenance and development
  • ERP system maintenance and development
  • Liaison with external suppliers of IT equipment, support and consultancy

You will be involved in an increasingly wide range of activities which will develop along with your skills and knowledge. Learning will be primarily on the job; however, formal training may be arranged as necessary to effectively perform the role.

Your normal working times will be 08:00 to 17:30, with one hour for lunch. Very occasionally, some evening or weekend work will be necessary to avoid system downtime during normal office hours.

Junior Project Manager

Berthon Boat Co Ltd is a family business located in the desirable town of Lymington between the Solent and the New Forest. Amongst a diverse range of activities, Berthon undertakes a number of new construction, rebuild and refit projects in both the commercial and yacht sectors.

Experienced Rigger

Marine Electrical / Electronics Engineer

Due to expansion and increasing demand for our high quality services, Berthon has an immediate position available for an experienced Marine Electrical/ Electronic Engineer to join our highly skilled team on marina & refit based projects.

Knowledge and skills

You must be Apprenticeship time served and have the following attributes:

  • Experienced in electronic installations and service support of market leaders including
    • Raymarine – the world leader in marine electronics for recreational boating and light commercial marine markets
    • Garmin – the leading GPS manufacturer, number two in the marine market
    • Navico – Distributor of the B&G, Simrad, Lowrance, Northstar, Eagle & MX Marine Brands.
  • Excellent diagnostic skills with the ability to work to exacting standards
  • In depth knowledge of Marine electrical DC and AC systems.

Candidates must be self starters, motivated, reliable have a good eye for detail and proven track record in the leisure or commercial marine industry

Main Duties and responsibilities

  • A wide range of electronic and electrical installations.
  • Fault diagnosis on a range of engine electronic management systems and navigation systems.
  • Commissioning, dock side trials, sea trials, collection and delivery trips.
  • Able to work on own initiative to provide support to customers.

PA to Managing Director

Confident and experienced PA required to provide administrative support for Managing Director in busy large boatyard & marina. The successful candidate must have first-hand knowledge & experience in marine terminology and will have strong organisational skills, coupled with good customer relations and a high level of computer competency. Berthon Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are now closed for 2017. We will be inviting applications for a September 2018 start in January 2018.

Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

The Selection Process

The first stage of the selection process is to complete an Application form.

In order to help your application we recommend you:

  • Gather evidence of your interest in the Marine industry.
  • Gather evidence of any relevant experience you have already gained in your chosen discipline.
  • Gain work experience in the trade you want to apply for either here at Berthon or in another manufacturing environment.
  • Research Berthon and the marine industry and consider why you want an Apprenticeship with Berthon.
  • Stand out from the crowd – the more evidence you can gather the stronger your application will become, this is your opportunity to sell your attributes.

If selected, you will attend an assessment, trade test and interview at our training provider Brockenhurst College. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to Berthon for a formal interview and tour of the facilities.

Pre-Requisites for a Berthon Apprenticeship:

Shipwright (Boat Builder)

If you are applying to be a Shipwright (Boat Builder) you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Evidence of working with wood, either at school or as a hobby

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Rigger

If you are applying to be a rigger you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*-D to include English and Maths
  • A strong interest in Sailing/ Yachting/ Boating
  • A head for heights for working aloft masts
  • Commitment to work outside all year round and in all weathers
  • Ability to follow instructions, enthusiastic with good communication skills

The training you will receive:

  • PEO Level 2
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Marine Engineering – Rigging
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Marine Engineering – Rigging
  • Functional skills such as: English, Maths and ICT
  • Specific machinery training with experience including Forklift, Cranes and tractors
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety and LEAN manufacturing as applicable
