PA to Managing Director

The successful candidate will have strong organisational skills, coupled with good customer relations and a high level of computer competency. PA to Managing Director

Confident and experienced PA required to provide administrative support for Managing Director in busy large boatyard & marina. The successful candidate must have first-hand knowledge & experience in marine terminology and will have strong organisational skills, coupled with good customer relations and a high level of computer competency. Knowledge and skills

  • Strong written English
  • Excellent computer skills, including Excel and MS Word

Boat Sales Executive (UK & Ireland) 

Berthon is looking for a dynamic boat sales executive for our new Gemini RIBs dealership, in order to establish and grow sales in the UK and Ireland to the commercial & defence sectors, and leisure boating.

The ideal candidate is an experienced salesman willing to explore new business opportunities with existing and new accounts: 

Key Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Create and implement a marketing strategy 
  • Organise and attending exhibitions
  • Work closely with the boat builder and engine suppliers to achieve maximum sales growth 
  • Make proposals to customers 
  • Write & submit tender responses 
  • Grow product sales into UK and Ireland
  • Up-sell other Berthon products and services
  • PDIs & sea trials 
  • Develop the after-market for spares, servicing, refits
  • Achieve year on year growth
  • Annual sales forecasts
  • Budgets 
  • Regular reporting of customer visits
  • Deliver regular input to the Business Development Manager:
    • sales opportunities

Experience and Skills:

  • Marine background 
  • Sales experience in the leisure marine sector, commercial sector and/or defence sector

  • Knowledge of marine operators, government organisations and commercial boat users within the UK and Irish Marine market would be beneficial

Marine Electrical / Electronics Engineer

Due to expansion and increasing demand for our high quality services, Berthon has an immediate position available for an experienced Marine Electrical/ Electronic Engineer to join our highly skilled team on marina & refit based projects.

Knowledge and skills

You must be Apprenticeship time served and have the following attributes:

  • Experienced in electronic installations and service support of market leaders including
    • Raymarine – the world leader in marine electronics for recreational boating and light commercial marine markets
    • Garmin – the leading GPS manufacturer, number two in the marine market
    • Navico – Distributor of the B&G, Simrad, Lowrance, Northstar, Eagle & MX Marine Brands.
  • Excellent diagnostic skills with the ability to work to exacting standards
  • In depth knowledge of Marine electrical DC and AC systems.

Candidates must be self starters, motivated, reliable have a good eye for detail and proven track record in the leisure or commercial marine industry

Main Duties and responsibilities

  • A wide range of electronic and electrical installations.
  • Fault diagnosis on a range of engine electronic management systems and navigation systems.
  • Commissioning, dock side trials, sea trials, collection and delivery trips.
  • Able to work on own initiative to provide support to customers.
  • A wide range of instrument and wiring upgrades.
  • Working in a team with all trades to produce a quality product to budget and on time.

Berthon Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are now closed for 2017. We will be inviting applications for a September 2018 start in January 2018.

At our recently refurbished Lymington boatyard facilities, the dedication to providing the best service is key to the yard’s success. Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

Apprenticeships are available in the following disciplines:

  • Painter/Sprayer
  • Shipwright

The Selection Process

The first stage of the selection process is to complete an Application form.

In order to help your application we recommend you:

  • Gather evidence of your interest in the Marine industry.
  • Gather evidence of any relevant experience you have already gained in your chosen discipline.
  • Gain work experience in the trade you want to apply for either here at Berthon or in another manufacturing environment.
  • Research Berthon and the marine industry and consider why you want an Apprenticeship with Berthon.
  • Stand out from the crowd – the more evidence you can gather the stronger your application will become, this is your opportunity to sell your attributes.

If selected, you will attend an assessment, trade test and interview at our training provider Brockenhurst College. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to Berthon for a formal interview and tour of the facilities.

Pre-Requisites for a Berthon Apprenticeship:

Painter/Sprayer

If you are applying to be a Painter/Sprayer you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Initiative and a genuine interest in producing a top quality product

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • Functional Skills such as English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as Health & Safety, City & Guilds spraying courses held at Berthon, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Shipwright (Boat Builder)

If you are applying to be a Shipwright (Boat Builder) you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Evidence of working with wood, either at school or as a hobby

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills such as English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Due to increasing demand Berthon has an immediate opening for an experienced Valeter to join our yacht valeting team.

  • Cutting GRP surfaces using power tools and applicable PPE
  • Polishing GRP & painted surfaces with appropriate products
  • Washing down various size yachts and motorboats within the marina
  • Full detailed valeting using appropriate products to create a professional finish (COSHH)
  • Other associated tasks as needed
  • The role also involves helping to keep our newly refurbished washroom facilities clean and maintaining the ship yard works area
