Berthon’s Marina is located at one of the most stunning and easily accessible locations on the south coast with 300 deepwater berths for RIBs, sailing yachts and motorboats up to 45m (150ft) barely ten minutes up the river from the Solent waters. The team who run it truly are a fundamental cog in the machine. Luke, Melvyn, Gary, Chaz, Dave & Chris, (and Lenny, our small French quadruped) all live locally so you’ll understand why they really are the best for any enquiries or questions you may have about the marina, Lymington and the surrounding New Forest. With their various backgrounds, ranging from RNLI crew to Berthon yacht refit manager, they may also be of some service if you have a problem on board. Just ask.
But, have you met them all?
Luke, Marina Manager – Luke has been in and around the water since leaving school. Starting out as a lifeguard in the US before moving back to the UK where he joined WightLink ferries; after a year of transiting the Solent countless times, Luke headed to Lymington Harbour Commissioners where he learnt a wealth of knowledge about the River. Luke then moved to MDL Marinas where he spent 7 years as a Duty Manager across the three Hamble Marinas and taking a lead role on wet side operations. It’s therefore great to welcome Luke back to Lymington to impart his infectious enthusiasm and experience to all in the Marina Team.
Luke said “It’s great to be back in Lymington and heading up the Marina Team here at Berthon. Having been a local all my life it’s a pleasure to be able to work for the May family and drive forward their passion to be the leaders in the marine industry. I hope that together we can remain the Solent’s most boutique and prestigious Marina providing a 5-star customer experience”.
Outside of work Luke is a keen cyclist and is undertaking a London to Paris bike ride in 2020. Luke takes advantage of Berthon’s open company policy on bringing (well-behaved) dogs to work; Lenny (the Frenchie) can be found most of the time with his head against the cupboard fast asleep!
Melvyn, Senior Dockmaster – A firm favourite with both our annual berth holders and returning customers. Melvyn has been at Berthon for 41 years and has seen the company grow from strength to strength. Melvyn’s experience is invaluable; when it comes to those awkward questions, Melvyn will know the answer. If he can’t be found in the office then he will be out and about on the Marina with his custom-made tool trolley, a sight to be seen ensuring all those odd jobs are done.
Outside of work Melvyn plays a key role in the local Royal British Legion and dedicates a week to selling poppies dressed fully in his kilt as well as helping organise the Lymington remembrance parade.
Gary, Senior Dockmaster – Gary joined in 2017, starting his Berthon career in the valeting team before jumping over to the Marina. With a background in the motor industry as General Sale’s manager, he brings a wealth of customer service experience. Gary is keen to continue working on his Marine knowledge undertaking various RYA courses.
Working on motorbikes, cars and generally anything with a motor, or assisting Melvyn getting one of his many motorbikes back on the road, is Gary’s prime hobby. He has recently become an avid caravan enthusiast and enjoys long weekends away with his wife.
Chaz, Senior Dockmaster – Chaz is the newest member of the Dockmaster team. Previously Chaz worked for large shopping centres heading up operations before heading out to France running a holiday let. On his return to the UK, he headed for the IOW where he worked at both Yarmouth and Bembridge as a Harbour Hand. Not content with being an islander, Chaz came back to the mainland where he worked on the Keyhaven River. Having been around boats since the age of 11 he has vast marine knowledge. It’s a pleasure to have Chaz join the team.
Outside of work, Chaz enjoys cycling, walking his dog and being out on his small day boat. Otherwise, he’s usually helping his wife with her arts and crafts, well the cleaning up anyway!
Chris, Senior Dockmaster – Chris has been with Berthon for almost 10 years after retiring from the banking industry, joining Berthon as a part-time Dockmaster as he wasn’t quite ready to give up work full time. Chris is usually in the office most weekends.
Outside of work Chris is a keen cyclist and also enjoys time on his boat Juliabet cruising around the Solent, the West Country and crossing the English Channel to France.
Dave, Dockmaster – Needs no introduction as he’s been with Berthon for 47 years. Yes, all his working career! Having started out as one of Berthon’s engineering apprentices he climbed the ranks through Chargehand to Foreman before working his way up to Refit Manager in the Yacht Maintenance & Repair team. Recently, Dave has slowly been working his way back down the ladder as Marina Manager and now enjoying semi-retirement as a part-time dockmaster. Having Dave on the dockmaster team means that pretty much any Berthon related question can be answered.
Dave can almost always be found enjoying his spare time aboard his yacht Amber, enjoying time with his wife Pauline who has recently retired.
Lenny, Dockmaster/Office Dog – This is Lenny, Marina Morale Manager and beloved pooch of Luke. Lenny went to the big dog park in the sky at the end of 2021, but is well-remembered and well-loved at Berthon Lymington Marina. He was the champion of discovering who had treats and where they were hiding them, and then a true master of the puppy dog eyes when trying to persuade visitors to part with them. He took his duties as morale manager extremely seriously and would often play an extra game of tug of war just to make sure his team had a smile on their faces. Much missed, we hope he is running freely in dog heaven!
If you have not met all of the team yet, make sure the next time you are walking by, pop in and say hello, they’re always up for a chat.
