The refit department is busy throughout the year, but they are particularly busy at the beginning of the season commissioning and readying yachts. A number of the yachts that they handle in the Spring are sold by us and spend some time in the care of our refit chaps getting them just so for their new owners and the new season. Below, we showcase 3 yachts that had the Berthon treatment –
S&S Seafarer 48 – CAPER:
A captivatingly pretty S&S design that turns heads wherever she goes. CAPER has just left us following some extensive refit work to her hull below the waterline. After 40 years of service, the laminate was in need of a thorough drying and some significant repairs to the keel area. After peeling the gel coat and first layers of original laminate she was dried by a process of heat lamps, warm air and patience! Once the moisture readings were down to an acceptable level the underwater sections were re-laminated and five coats of West Epoxy resin applied, before finishing with Coppercoat. Whilst she was with us we also manufactured a new rudder to the original S&S drawings, fabricated new parts for the Edson steering quadrant and fitted new shaft seals and bearings.
Sunbeam 44 – NOOKA:
A capable blue water cruising yacht that is perfect for long distance adventures and which we sold to her new owner après a Caribbean circuit. With her new owners in charge, her Berthon treatment included removal of the retro-fitted fuel tank and sundry blue water cruising gear. An extensive inspection of the mast and rigging showed that we needed to replace a broken spreader and supply and fit a new boom, gooseneck fittings, running rigging and guard wires. New covers were fitted all round and a full external valet was undertaken. NOOKA is now looking seriously fab.
Najad 440 – LYRA:
A great Scandinavian with great build quality and with slippery Judel Vrolijk lines, she was pit stopped for her new owners to ready her for use in the Mediterranean this season. After purchase, over the course of the winter an extensive nautical makeover was carried out, including the replacement of all standing rigging, installation of a new 3.5Kw generator and a comprehensive reworking of the domestic electrics. The Berthon marine electronics team installed a new Raymarine electronics package and VHF were also installed. We envy those azure, balmy and warm waters in 2013.
We wish CAPER, NOOKA, LYRA and their crews, fair winds and good sailing from the Berthon crew. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
