February 3, 2020
Given the success of Boot 2019 it was with a degree of excitement and anticipation that the Berthon team stepped into Boot Düsseldorf 2020. The profile of this prestigious event is definitely rising and becoming renowned as the exhibition of choice for yacht buyers. With every major builder attending, nowhere else can potential clients make back to back comparisons in such close proximity. Boot Düsseldorf was most definitely a huge hit, with a steady flow throughout the week of yachting enthusiasts from all over the world. Boot is most certainly here to stay, appreciated as a major event for the yachting industry.
Solaris Yachts – Performance Cruising
Solaris Yachts did not disappoint with their usual air of understated Italian style. Solaris presented the 44, 47, 50 and 64. Resplendent with their dreadnought bows, sparkling topsides, flush teak decks and clean unencumbered cockpits, it’s fair to say the yachts are pretty striking. The Solaris Yachts stand received a good number of advance appointments prior to the show, a very healthy footfall throughout the week, and we have come away with a refreshed database of new followers and good leads. The mood at Solaris as we enter 2020 is most definitely buoyant, with a healthy order book, several new designs currently in build and more on the drawing board!
Solaris Power – Seaworthiness, Functionality & Safety
The Solaris Power division took two versions of the 48 to Boot Düsseldorf, exhibiting this new brand for the first time. We launched the new closed-top 48 Lobster (the first Solaris Power boat with flybridge), which was super-popular, especially with the Northern and Scandinavian market, and were always busy on the 48 Open. Solaris’ Forli yard specialises in highly-technical construction, with expertise in full carbon manufacture and composites, and the stunning flared lines and contemporary styling of the 48 Open clothe a superbly-engineered hull and a beautifully-executed machinery space. With the Italian powerboat legend Norberto Ferretti on board with the project’s evolution, and his style cues harking back to American lobster boats from the 1930’s, these are really differentiated from the crowd of white plastic open boats which now proliferate the market. It was thus fitting that the judges for the European Power Boat of the Year selected the 48 Open as their winning choice at a gala presentation dinner on the show’s first night!
Windy Boats – Quality Scandinavian Performance and Craftsmanship
There was plenty of news from Windy during the show! The stand was buzzing, and carried graphics of the stunning SLR60 superyacht chaseboat, designed by Malcolm McKeon’s Yacht Design Team – a project that will be Windy’s flagship. Düsseldorf hosted the eagerly-awaited launch of the Espen Oeino-designed Windy 37 Shamal, a radically cool-looking day-boat with a vast cockpit, and an open-plan, 4-berth lower cabin. The interior has beautifully-executed features, with plenty of natural light, stowage space and carries on the bloodline of Windy’s range of classic opens such as the Khamsin. The show also hosted the Northern European debut of the Windy 44 Blackhawk, a staggeringly proficient walk-round super-boat combining epic performance, super-sharp cabin styling and a long, lounging aft cockpit for enjoying time shared on the water. Düsseldorf ’s key early season timing allows current orders to be refined for summer delivery, and we saw many current and future owners visiting for a relaxed discussion. Three other models on display included the new Windy 32 Grand Zonda RS’ blend of class-leading features and significant trim enhancement, synergising Windy’s Scandinavian DNA of building the highest quality sea-boats, with suitability for use from the Med. to their home fjords.
Pearl Yachts – Brilliantly Designed, Beautifully Detailed
Our team on Pearl had a fantastic show, with the result including a confirmed order for the superb 4-cabin Pearl 62, on her global debut, to one of our UK clients. Bill Dixon has continued to take care of the naval architecture and exterior lines of the Pearl, with a phenomenally light interior by the renowned designer Kelly Hoppen, creating a fresh, contemporary feel. Externally, a long three-zone flybridge and two main deck seating areas offer a myriad of options for entertaining. The aft private owners’ cabin is an absolute tour de force – with strong design features, feature hull windows and amazing space available. It is a remarkable achievement to fit four proper double cabins without sacrifice into an 18 metre hull, and the interior styling is very calm and harmonious. Pearl were also showing the mighty 80 on the stand, and we saw strong footfall amongst both experienced UK boaters who have watched the evolution of the brand over the years, and those looking at the brand for the first time.
Iguana Yachts – Amphibious Yachts with Amazing Capabilites
Iguana Yachts exhibited for the first time at Boot Düsseldorf 2020 and were located in the very aptly named Super Boats Hall! Iguana Yachts did a fantastic job of displaying the Iguana X100 RIB, which has been a huge success since its launch last year. The exhibition got off to a terrific start for Iguana Yachts, with a well deserved nomination for the Motor Boat of the Year Award. It was certainly a compliment to be shortlisted among such quality! The stand was cleverly converted into an Iguana garage, instantly engaging people to think about storage solutions for their beach houses or waterfront properties. Fun was had watching the complete shock across many a face, the crowd incredulous at the Iguana’s amphibious capabilities, sparking fascinating conversations on the why, what, when and how of these superbly versatile vessels.
