MGB 81 is a 71.5ft Motor Gun Boat built by the British Powerboat Company for the Royal Navy and launched on 26 June 1942. When built, she was among the fastest boat of her type in the world and capable of speeds in excess of 42 knots. Berthon was awarded the contract by Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust for the restoration and re-engining of the famous Motor Gun Boat 81 (MGB81) funded by the Chancellor using LIBOR funds.
Berthon’s well-established management processes help deliver these services, supporting other government organisations as well as the commercial sector. We can also provide bespoke design services either in-house or working with independent marine design consultants.
Berthon has extensive experience in the provision of vessel in-service support to various organisations including the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Port Authorities, pilots and other commercial operators. Potential clients can be confident that Berthon has a great team in place that will deliver exceptional service, no matter where the vessel is based.
Berthon has a wealth of experience in all marine sectors. We employ over 100 skilled technicians including marine engineers, electricians, riggers, painters, joiners and shipwrights at our modern south coast shipyard. We are one of the few shipyards able to provide our commercial clients end-to end services throughout the UK.
Berthon’s modern 1,100 sq/m paint facility is dedicated to the preparation and spraying of commercial and government sector vessels, as well as their structures and components. Our highly skilled and well trained staff produce excellent results time and again for our clients.
Rather than commission a brand new pilot boat, ABP South Wales decided to extend the life of Providence by giving her new machinery and improving the design of several aspects of the boat based on user experiences over the years.
Final part of Providence refit including sea trials with a very happy client giving this pilot vessel an extended service life of 10 to 15 years.
