Specified from new by one fastidious Owner, this 2012 example is a light, fresh and modern take on the classic semi-displacement trawler yacht. Benefitting from zero-speed Wesmar stabilisation for guaranteed comfort at anchor and underway, full air-conditioning, a comprehensive Raymarine navigational suite, and a stunning beech interior, she offers exceptional sea-keeping with versatile accommodation. This motor-yacht has full MCA coding equipment on board and we note that her present Owner has offered her for skippered charter. Her frugal twin Cummins power-plants deliver a 10 knot cruise at 50 lph combined fuel burn, with an 18 knot top end if required, and she has twin thrusters and a substantial keel for ease of control when manoeuvring.
“INVINCIBLE MOOSE” was hand-built in China, using selected woods and soft-furnishings, to create a stunning fusion of timeless trawler-styling with a light, contemporary interior. With solid, over-gauge fittings, substantial deck gear and plentiful stowage volume, she has the reassuring feel and bow sheer of a little ship, rather than a motor-yacht; whilst remaining easily manageable by a short crew, or a couple.
We selected the Clipper 60 after 2 years of detailed research, and from a shortlist of Grand Banks, Selene, Fleming, Grand Alaskan and Aquastar. IMHO none of the other brands offered the stability, space, quality and efficiency that Clipper provided, plus we customised the entire interior to deliver an optimum configuration and feel.
The build was in China where we stayed for 2 weeks. The yard is run by a veteran Brit, with Chinese craftsmen doing almost everything by hand and largely with traditional hand tools. It was a sight to behold, nothing like what you would see in Poole.
Whilst the images here show the beautiful lines and spacious configuration, there are 4 main areas that distinguished it for us, and placed it uniquely above its more well-known rivals. Sample them and you’ll see the difference.
Stability: the hull is quite superb, a deep heavy keel providing natural directional stability beyond its competitors. Then we added zero-speed WESMAR stabilisers which take out all roll, even cruising in 3.5m seas. A demonstration of full steering lock at 12kts shows the boat remains flat for a full 360 degrees. At anchor they limit the roll substantially so you can enjoy a meal without the wash of passing Pershings spilling anything. With bow and stern thrusters acting with the deep keel, she stays where you place her in the water and makes positioning into a tight berth in a crosswind, easy, flattering this skipper’s modest skills. Indeed, whilst we always cruise with at least two on board, the skipper alone can dock her into a berth unaided.
Space: custom exterior configuration provides huge flexible fly deck with reclined or flat sun-loungers for up to 8 around the helm, plus 4 flat on sheltered front deck, and 3 forward seated, without impinging on deck workspace. Safe covered side decks with high rails and cameras protect all family and guests. A large aft cockpit is great for al fresco dining in the evening; an outsize swim platform is very usable. The main lounge provides two large facing sculptured settees, styled from a private jet interior. Open galley and pilothouse makes for the feeling of a 70ft motor-yacht. The lower deck comprises a grand master suite with large washroom and shower, with ample room for 2. The 2nd and 3rd cabins are both doubles, and share a second equally large washroom and separate shower. Finally the lazarette and engine room are again outsized, with great headroom and space to work round all sides of each of the 2 Cummins engines.
Quality: the motor-yacht is hand built. That says it all: fittings fit; everything is in the right place. All usable space has been allocated to drawers and wider storage, leaving clean and uncluttered lines throughout. And we selected the pale contemporary beech wood to differentiate the boat from the traditional “Captain Birdseye” teak.
VFM: she’s a sizeable custom motor-yacht £200,000 below any direct comparable. She is also very economic, sipping 20 lit/hr/engine at 7kts. She is equally happy cruising at 13-15kts all day, if you are in a hurry. And her hull is ideal at all cruising speeds, making her very flexible. Underwater exhausts and additional soundproofing make her exceptionally quiet, throughout the boat. As the 2013/2014 factory European demonstrator, she has won the hearts of many discerning buyers.
