We know AKARANA well, having sold her as LOLITA to her current owners. The Swan 56 shows Nautor Swan at their very best providing a powerful blue water cruising yacht that will regatta or cruise comfortably. AKARANA is a high specification yacht with a Hall carbon Spar and a beautiful fit out. In this ownership she has been much improved. The hull deck joint was completely remade with a new teak toerail, and she also has new teak decks. She also has a Hugh Welbourne designed keel taking the draft from the original of 3.4m to 2.85m. This makes the yacht much friendlier for cruising and is a huge improvement. The work was signed off by Lars Strom and the keel was altered by Iron Brothers with the original shaft remaining, they fabricated a new bulb. The keel bolts remain as was and the righting moment also remains the same. In addition to these improvements are lots of other upgrades including new batteries this year. Always the prettiest yacht in any anchorage, she also sails beautifully.
We bought AKARANA on the East Coast of the USA, and sailed her home across the Atlantic. We were looking for a high quality powerful cruising yacht with excellent performance and the then LOLITA fitted the bill perfectly. Once back in Europe we have had some lovely cruises in Scotland and also in Northern and Southern Brittany. With her stack packed mainsail she is easy for the 2 of us to sail alone. Her interior layout is perfect for family sailing with the Owners’ Stateroom forward and a double with pipecoat, and a second upper and lower berth cabin for guests of family in the stern. The aft cockpit access makes her really safe for long distance sailing and Nautor have been clever providing handholds in all the right places and passageways that are secure in a sea way.
For sure our favourite thing about AKARANA is her sailing performance. She is easy, powerful and fantastic upwind. She sails close and fast and without effort. However, my personal very favourite thing is the shower in the owners’ cabin – I will miss this dreadfully – so much better than the one at home!
Having had 6 fantastic years with AKARANA, and having shelved our plans to sail her to the Southern Hemisphere as the arrival of grandchildren has intervened; we have sadly decided that she must be sold. She is in much better shape than when we found her and we hope that her new owners will enjoy her as much as we have.
