Trainee Sailing Yacht Broker

Overview of Position:

This is a trainee position at Berthon’s UK HQ working in the sailing yacht department assisting with brokerage sales and learning the brokerage process. Berthon specializes in the sales of bluewater cruising yachts and supports the ARC. The Trainee will need to conscientiously build up their product knowledge in this field and may be expected to attend boat shows and Rally events as needed.

Reporting to Sue Grant.

On a day to day basis the trainee broker will be working closely with Alan McIlroy and Ben Cooper but will have a lot of contact with the rest of the Sales Team.

Duties:

These will be undertaken with supervision from more senior members of the team:

  • Spending time to acquire the product knowledge to enable the job to be properly actioned.
  • Gaining thorough product knowledge of the bluewater cruising yacht market.
  • Learning as much as possible about the Discovery, Contest and Wauquiez product..
  • Preparing particulars.
  • Contact with yacht owners and yacht purchasers.
  • Assisting in the office with all support work necessary to both sailing yacht and the motor yacht division.
  • Participating in Boat Shows and other events as required.
  • Learning the brokerage process and attending any training courses at the request of the company as should be necessary.
  • Participating in the Weekend duty Rota – Berthon is open 7 days a week.
  • Working with other parts of the business to assist in selling Berthon services across the board.
  • Assisting overseas Berthon offices as required.
  • Any other tasks that may be required to assist with the smooth running of the Sales Division.

Receptionist Administrator

The post offered is a job share of the description below.

Reporting to: Sue Grant – Managing Director

Main Purpose:

  • To carry out reception duties as necessary.
  • To provide secretarial support to the Brokers as required.
  • To provide additional support to the MD’s PA as required.
  • To provide support as required at the Berthon Collection during September, and any other shows that Berthon may attend.

Principle Duties:

Reception:

  • Answer the telephone, Berthon operates a 3 ring policy, ensuring messages are taken accurately and passed on as quickly as possible.
  • Maintain a presentable reception/front of house at all times.
  • Meet & greet clients, making tea/coffee as required.
  • Post duties – book mail in and frank mail out etc.

Provide support to the MD’s PA:

  • Assist as required.

Secretarial Support to the Brokers:

  • Typing of correspondence, quotes and emails and other admin duties.
  • Typing of Bills of Sale, Invoices and Statements together with photocopying and filing as required.
  • Mail/email standard letters.
  • To provide admin support 1:4 Saturday mornings on a rota basis between Easter and the Collection in September.

Marketing & Listing Support:

  • Dealing with brokerage lists and boards in Reception.
  • Covering the listing desk as required.
  • Knowledge of Adobe and Photoshop would be an advantage
  • Assisting with preparation of advertising, proof reading and collating required information.

Hours: Mondays and Fridays – 8.30 – 17.30 with 1 hour for lunch. You will be expected to share with other support, the manning of the office on a Saturday morning from 09.00 – 13.00 on a rota basis between Easter and September.

Junior Dockmaster

Junior Marina Dockmaster required until end September/October to work shift work, incl weekends & Bank Holidays in busy Marina office.

Knowledge, Skills, and Duties

  • Marina/Nautical background and experience preferred, but full training will be given.
  • Basic understanding of the leisure Marine Industry
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, carry out twice daily berth checks, and ensure boats are adequately secured at all times.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable, and able to multi task in a busy working environment
  • Presentable, with Good Customer focus and service skills
  • Good telephone manner and able to communicate using VHF radio and portable UHF radios
  • Use VHF Radio to issue instructions and advise to visiting yachts
  • Computer literate, able to process bookings, database’s and accounts (MS Office, Access)
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of monies in the office, issue receipts, and balance sales at close of business each day
  • Process Purchase Orders, and maintain accurate computer records.
  • Able to serve fuel from a floating refueller and complete accounts
  • Be Security and Safety conscious, and ensure the same for all visiting clients and boat owners
  • Ability to Risk Assess whilst completing various tasks, throughout the working day, think ahead and plan for the busy holiday periods.
  • Reasonable DIY skills for general maintenance and cleaning work around the marina, and storage yard.
  • Ability to liaise with other departments of Berthon, such as the Brokerage and Refits group.
  • Able to note and remember boat movements within marina and refit yard

The Selection Process

The first stage of the selection process is to complete an Application form.

In order to help your application we recommend you:

  • Gather evidence of your interest in the Marine industry.
  • Gather evidence of any relevant experience you have already gained in your chosen discipline.
  • Gain work experience in the trade you want to apply for either here at Berthon or in another manufacturing environment.
  • Research Berthon and the marine industry and consider why you want an Apprenticeship with Berthon.
  • Stand out from the crowd – the more evidence you can gather the stronger your application will become, this is your opportunity to sell you attributes.

If selected, you will attend an assessment, trade test and interview at our training provider Brockenhurst College. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to Berthon for a formal interview and tour of the facilities.

Pre-Requisites for a Berthon Apprenticeship:

Marine Engineer

If you are applying to be a Marine Engineer you MUST have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths at Grade B or above and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for problem solving and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, fixed machinery, manufacturers’ technical training and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Marine Electrician

If you are applying to be a Marine Electrician you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include two at A* – B in Maths and English plus a technology or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for Science, Maths and problem solving

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including market leaders Raymarine and Garmin, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Shipwright (Boat Builder)

If you are applying to be a Shipwright (Boat Builder) you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Evidence of working with wood, either at school or as a hobby

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Painter/Sprayer

If you are applying to be a Painter/Sprayer you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Initiative, mind-set and genuine interest in producing a top quality product

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, City & Guilds spraying courses held at Berthon, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Marina Operative/ Boatmover

If you are applying to be a Marina Operative/Boatmover you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D to include English and Maths
  • A good knowledge of boat handling skills
  • Initiative and team work ethos

Wooden Boat Project Manager

To specify, cost, quote, sell, manage and invoice all wooden boat projects, including small repairs, larger refits and complete rebuilds.

Responsibilities include:

  • Following up enquiries from customers
  • Liaising with suppliers regarding specifications
  • Viewing boats to draw up a technical specification
