With 100 craftsmen and state of the art yard facilities in Lymington, Hampshire, Berthon has the ability to deal with all aspects of yacht maintenance, refits and boat repairs. We are also available for yacht construction or fit-out projects at the highest level. Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

Yacht Refit Manager

Berthon is seeking an experienced yachtsman or engineer to join our team of 12 existing yacht refit managers. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Following up enquiries from customers
  • Pursuing sales leads
  • Liaising with manufacturers regarding specifications
  • Viewing boats to draw up technical specification
  • Costing labour and materials
  • Quoting customers
  • Following up customers after quoting
  • Obtaining signed orders & deposit payments
  • Scheduling work
  • Managing labour, materials & sub-contractors
  • Sea trials and setting to work
  • Familiarisation of new equipment with owner
  • Invoicing & the collection of payment
  • After-refit service

Berthon is a family business, and we have no bank debt, investing continuously in our plant, machinery & infrastructure from our retained profits, not by borrowing. We own our 10-acre site and 8 acres of the river. Our conservative approach allowed us to weather the recession and we look forward to continued success with our latest expansion plans.

Parts Controller / Storeperson

Berthon has a vacancy for a Parts Controller/storeperson to supplement our small stores team in a fast moving environment providing support for various projects in our modern facilities.

The following attributes are essential for this role:

  • Computer literate with a good working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems
  • Proven track record in a fast moving high-pressure stores environment
  • Quality control & good record keeping attributes
  • Organised in stock rotation

Berthon Apprenticeships

Apprentiships are now closed for 2016. We will be inviting applications for a September 2017 start in January 2017.

Berthon has been synonymous with yacht build and boat repairs since 1877, and we have a wealth of knowledge and experience. With 100 craftsmen and state of the art yard facilities in Lymington, Hampshire, Berthon has the ability to deal with all aspects of yacht maintenance, refits and boat repairs. We are also available for yacht construction or fit-out projects at the highest level. At our recently refurbished Lymington boatyard facilities, the dedication to providing the best service is key to the yards success. Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

Apprenticeships are available in the following disciplines:

  • Marine Engineering
  • Marine Electrical
  • Shipwright
  • Painter/Sprayer
  • Rigger (New for 2017)

The Selection Process

The first stage of the selection process is to complete an Application form.

In order to help your application we recommend you:

  • Gather evidence of your interest in the Marine industry.
  • Gather evidence of any relevant experience you have already gained in your chosen discipline.
  • Gain work experience in the trade you want to apply for either here at Berthon or in another manufacturing environment.
  • Research Berthon and the marine industry and consider why you want an Apprenticeship with Berthon.
  • Stand out from the crowd – the more evidence you can gather the stronger your application will become, this is your opportunity to sell you attributes.

If selected, you will attend an assessment, trade test and interview at our training provider Brockenhurst College. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to Berthon for a formal interview and tour of the facilities.

Pre-Requisites for a Berthon Apprenticeship:

Marine Engineer

If you are applying to be a Marine Engineer you MUST have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths at Grade B or above and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for problem solving and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, fixed machinery, manufacturers’ technical training and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Marine Electrician

If you are applying to be a Marine Electrician you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include two at A* – B in Maths and English plus a technology or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for Science, Maths and problem solving

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including market leaders Raymarine and Garmin, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Shipwright (Boat Builder)

If you are applying to be a Shipwright (Boat Builder) you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Evidence of working with wood, either at school or as a hobby

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Painter/Sprayer

If you are applying to be a Painter/Sprayer you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Initiative, mind-set and genuine interest in producing a top quality product

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, City & Guilds spraying courses held at Berthon, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Rigger

If you are applying to be a rigger you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*-D to include English and Maths
  • A strong interest in Sailing/ Yachting/ Boating
  • A head for heights for working aloft masts
  • Commitment to work outside all year round and in all weathers
  • Ability to follow instructions, enthusiastic with good communication skills

The training you will receive:

  • PEO Level 2
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Marine Engineering – Rigging
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Marine Engineering – Rigging
  • Functional skills such as: English, Maths and ICT
  • Specific machinery training with experience including Forklift, Cranes and tractors
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Experienced Valeter

Summary

Due to increasing demand Berthon has an immediate opening for an experienced Valeter to join our yacht valeting team.

  • Cutting GRP surfaces using power tools and applicable PPE
  • Polishing GRP & painted surfaces with appropriate products
  • Washing down various size yachts and motorboats within the marina
  • Full detailed valeting using appropriate products to create a professional finish (COSHH)
  • Other associated tasks as needed
  • The role also involves helping to keep our newly refurbished washroom facilities clean and maintaining the ship yard works area
