Junior Dockmaster

Berthon is looking for a few Junior Dockmasters to join our busy Marina team to help maintain the standards our marina clients expect, starting immediately through our busy summer period.

Berthon has been synonymous with yacht build and boat repairs since 1877, and we have a wealth of knowledge and experience. With 100 craftsmen and state of the art yard facilities in Lymington, Hampshire, Berthon has the ability to deal with all aspects of yacht maintenance, refits and boat repairs. We are also available for yacht construction or fit-out projects at the highest level. Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

Junior Dockmaster

Junior Marina Dockmaster required until end September/October to work part time, shift work, incl weekends & Bank Holidays in busy Marina office.

Knowledge, Skills, and Duties

  • Marina/Nautical background and experience preferred, but full training will be given.
  • Basic understanding of the leisure Marine Industry.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, carry out twice daily berth checks, and ensure boats are adequately secured at all times.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable, and able to multitask in a busy working environment.
  • Presentable, with Good Customer focus and service skills.
  • Good telephone manner and able to communicate using VHF radio and portable UHF radios.
  • Use VHF Radio to issue instructions and advise to visiting yachts.
  • Computer literate, able to process bookings, database’s and accounts (MS Office, Access).
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of monies in the office, issue receipts, and balance sales at close of business each day.
  • Process Purchase Orders, and maintain accurate computer records.
  • Able to serve fuel from a floating refueller and complete accounts.
  • Be Security and Safety conscious, and ensure the same for all visiting clients and boat owners.
  • Ability to Risk Assess whilst completing various tasks, throughout the working day, think ahead and plan for the busy holiday periods.
  • Reasonable DIY skills for general maintenance, various outside tasks, including light gardening, sweeping, and cleaning work around the marina and storage yard.
  • bility to liaise with other departments of Berthon, such as the Brokerage and Refits group.
  • Able to note and remember boat movements within marina and refit yard.
  • A willing, and  flexible  attitude is required  for this position due to the variety of tasks and duties involved.
  • Due to the nature of the position, this is a part time seasonal job that entails shift work and weekends, ideal candidates should be local to Berthon.

Berthon Apprenticeships

Applications for the September 2015 apprentice intake are now being accepted.

Berthon has been synonymous with yacht build and boat repairs since 1877, and we have a wealth of knowledge and experience. With 100 craftsmen and state of the art yard facilities in Lymington, Hampshire, Berthon has the ability to deal with all aspects of yacht maintenance, refits and boat repairs. We are also available for yacht construction or fit-out projects at the highest level. At our recently refurbished Lymington boatyard facilities, the dedication to providing the best service is key to the yards success. Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

Apprenticeships are available in the following disciplines:

  • Marine Engineering
  • Marine Electrical
  • Shipwright
  • Painter/Sprayer
  • Marina Operative/Boatmover (New for 2014)

The Selection Process

The first stage of the selection process is to complete an Application form.

In order to help your application we recommend you:

  • Gather evidence of your interest in the Marine industry.
  • Gather evidence of any relevant experience you have already gained in your chosen discipline.
  • Gain work experience in the trade you want to apply for either here at Berthon or in another manufacturing environment.
  • Research Berthon and the marine industry and consider why you want an Apprenticeship with Berthon.
  • Stand out from the crowd – the more evidence you can gather the stronger your application will become, this is your opportunity to sell you attributes.

If selected, you will attend an assessment, trade test and interview at our training provider Brockenhurst College. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to Berthon for a formal interview and tour of the facilities.

Pre-Requisites for a Berthon Apprenticeship:

Marine Engineer

If you are applying to be a Marine Engineer you MUST have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths at Grade B or above and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for problem solving and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, fixed machinery, manufacturers’ technical training and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Marine Electrician

If you are applying to be a Marine Electrician you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include two at A* – B in Maths and English plus a technology or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for Science, Maths and problem solving

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including market leaders Raymarine and Garmin, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Shipwright (Boat Builder)

If you are applying to be a Shipwright (Boat Builder) you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Evidence of working with wood, either at school or as a hobby

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Painter/Sprayer

If you are applying to be a Painter/Sprayer you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Initiative, mind-set and genuine interest in producing a top quality product

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Paint Finishing)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, City & Guilds spraying courses held at Berthon, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

  • Cutting.
  • Polishing.
  • Washing down.
  • Full detailed valeting.
  • Other associated tasks as needed.
  • The role also involves helping to keep our newly refurbished washroom facilities clean and maintaining the ship yard works area.
