Marine Electrical / Electronic Engineer

Due to expansion and increasing demand for our high quality services, Berthon has an immediate position available for an experienced Marine Electrical/ Electronic Engineer to join our highly skilled team on marina & refit based projects.

Knowledge and skills

You must be Apprenticeship time served and have the following attributes:

  • Experienced in electronic installations and service support of market leaders including
    • Raymarine – the world leader in marine electronics for recreational boating and light commercial marine markets
    • Garmin – the leading GPS manufacturer, number two in the marine market
    • Navico – Distributor of the B&G, Simrad, Lowrance, Northstar, Eagle & MX Marine Brands.
  • Excellent diagnostic skills with the ability to work to exacting standards
  • In depth knowledge of Marine electrical DC and AC systems.

Candidates must be self starters, motivated, reliable have a good eye for detail and proven track record in the leisure or commercial marine industry

Main Duties and responsibilities

  • A wide range of electronic and electrical installations.
  • Fault diagnosis on a range of engine electronic management systems and navigation systems.
  • Commissioning, dock side trials, sea trials, collection and delivery trips.
  • Able to work on own initiative to provide support to customers.
  • A wide range of instrument and wiring upgrades.
  • Working in a team with all trades to produce a quality product to budget and on time.

Stores Apprentices

Vacancy Description

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with enthusiasm and drive for delivering excellent customer service.  As an apprentice you’ll be earning as you learn, combining practical training in a job with study towards a Level 2 Certificate in Warehousing & Storage.

  • Receiving/dispatching goods
  • Developing a good product knowledge
  • Monitoring stock
  • Counter Services
  • Operating warehouse management system
  • Picking and Stowing
  • Returns processing
  • Assist with loading and unloading of delivery vehicles
  • Assisting in the warehouse and ensuring secure at day end
  • Health and safety in the warehouse environment
  • Recycling packaging wherever possible
  • General upkeep of premises and other related duties at manager’s discretion

 

This position would ideally suit a school or college leaver.

 

Working Week 

42.5 Hours. Mon to Fri. 8:00am to 5:00pm

 

Training to be provided

  • Level 2 Warehousing & Storage,
  • Functional Skills such as Math, English, ICT and communication
  • Forklift License (timing subject to age and experience)
  • Various other courses such as Health and Safety, first aid at work etc

What you’ll need:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A* – D
  • Computer knowledge including Word and Excel
  • Passion for the logistics industry and a willingness to learn
  • Good communication & interpersonal skills
  • A strong aptitude for problem solving & attention to detail
  • Understanding of customer service and behaviors required
  • Initiative and team work ethos
  • Conscientiousness for the general cleanliness and upkeep of the facility
  • This role may involve moderate lifting and climbing ladders therefore a good level of fitness is required

Paint Supervisor

To supervise all painting operations from complete re-sprays with AwlGrip, International & other 2 pack polyurethane paints, to small components and repairs, varnishing and antifouling.

The successful applicant will be a skilled and experienced yacht spray painter with a keen attention to detail, pride in cosmetic finish and a desire for zero defects.

Including:

  • Organisation of labour & materials for all painting jobs
  • Liaison with project managers and refit managers
  • Liaison with other trades (shipwrights, engineers, electricians, riggers)

Boatmover Required

Due to increasing demand for our high quality services, Berthon has an immediate position available for a boatmover to join our small and friendly team, dealing with internal and external clients.

Knowledge and skills

Ideally the successful candidate will already be experienced in a boat moving/ marina operator role with a proven track record of using various boatmoving equipment, launches and plant although someone with strong boat handling skills and an interest into moving into this role would definitely be considered.

A pro-active practical approach and can do attitude is essential to this fast moving role as well as the ability to undertake various challenging manual handling activities both ashore and on the water in a safe and effective manner.  You will be a team player who is fully conversant with the Health & Safety requirements of LOLER.

Main Duties and responsibilities

  • Set up and use of boat moving equipment and ancillaries.

    • 45T Abi boat trailer
    • 38T Roodberg boat trailer
    • 22T Roodberg boat trailer

  • Collection and return of boats by towing with yard launch.

We are also available for yacht construction or fit-out projects at the highest level. At our recently refurbished Lymington boatyard facilities, the dedication to providing the best service is key to the yards success. Berthon’s apprenticeship scheme has been established for more than 100 years, and many of our craftsmen have been with us throughout their working life.

Apprenticeships are available in the following disciplines:

  • Marine Engineering
  • Marine Electrical
  • Shipwright
  • Painter/Sprayer
  • Marina Operative/Boatmover (New for 2014)

The Selection Process

The first stage of the selection process is to complete an Application form.

In order to help your application we recommend you:

  • Gather evidence of your interest in the Marine industry.
  • Gather evidence of any relevant experience you have already gained in your chosen discipline.
  • Gain work experience in the trade you want to apply for either here at Berthon or in another manufacturing environment.
  • Research Berthon and the marine industry and consider why you want an Apprenticeship with Berthon.
  • Stand out from the crowd – the more evidence you can gather the stronger your application will become, this is your opportunity to sell you attributes.

If selected, you will attend an assessment, trade test and interview at our training provider Brockenhurst College. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to Berthon for a formal interview and tour of the facilities.

Pre-Requisites for a Berthon Apprenticeship:

Marine Engineer

If you are applying to be a Marine Engineer you MUST have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths at Grade B or above and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for problem solving and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, fixed machinery, manufacturers’ technical training and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Marine Electrician

If you are applying to be a Marine Electrician you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include two at A* – B in Maths and English plus a technology or relevant science subject
  • A strong aptitude for Science, Maths and problem solving

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Electrical)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including market leaders Raymarine and Garmin, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Shipwright (Boat Builder)

If you are applying to be a Shipwright (Boat Builder) you MUST have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- C to include Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Evidence of working with wood, either at school or as a hobby

The training you will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Marine Engineering (Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills such as: English, Maths, ICT and Communication
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University and LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Painter/Sprayer

If you are applying to be a Painter/Sprayer you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*- D
  • Have a good eye for attention to detail
  • Initiative, mind-set and genuine interest in producing a top quality product

Junior Dockmaster

Junior Marina Dockmaster required until end September/October to work part time, shift work, incl weekends & Bank Holidays in busy Marina office.

Knowledge, Skills, and Duties

  • A willing, and  flexible  attitude is required  for this position.
  • Marina/Nautical background and experience preferred, but full training will be given.
  • Basic understanding of the leisure Marine Industry.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, carry out twice daily berth checks, and ensure boats are adequately secured at all times.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable, and able to multitask in a busy working environment.
  • Must be presentable, with good customer focus and service skills.
  • Good telephone manner and able to communicate using VHF radio and portable UHF radios.
  • Use VHF radio to issue instructions and advice to visiting yachts.
  • Computer literate, able to process bookings and databases.
  • Ensure safe handling of monies in the office.
  • Maintain accurate computer records.
  • To serve petrol and diesel from our floating fuel barge and process sales.
  • Be security and safety conscious.
  • Tasks will include: Marina duties, light gardening, sweeping, and cleaning work around the Marina and boatyard.
  • Candidates should be local to Lymington.
