On Friday 15th March, as part of National Apprenticeship Week, Berthon Boat Company, based in Lymington played host to our local MP, the Rt. Hon Desmond Swayne TD. Mr Swayne was shown around by Brian May, Managing Director and Keith Longman, Yard Manager of Berthon.
It was a great opportunity for Mr Swayne to see the diversity, quality and detail of the major works in progress in the sheds including the new build Shannon Class Lifeboats for the RNLI, refit and repair work for the MOD and private refits on a variety of vessels. Mr Swayne also met two of Berthon’s apprentices Jack Gunstone-Smith and Joe Bullen who both gave him an insight into their apprenticeships and why they chose this career path.
1st year Shipwright apprentice, Joe, told him ‘I live locally and did my work experience from school at Berthon; from that experience of the workplace I decided that this was the career for me. I am really pleased I chose an apprenticeship as I am gaining nationally recognized qualifications as well as earning as I learn my trade.’
